Al Terry Plumbing & Heating Plumbing Apprentice in Hooksett, New Hampshire

An apprentice plumber gains plumbing qualifications through a combination of classroom teaching and practical experience in a certified apprenticeship program. Apprenticeships are approved by the Department of Labor and enable students to work on nationally recognized certification. Candidates will complete an application and interview process to earn a place in one of these programs. As you gain experience, you may begin to complete some duties independently or with limited supervision. These duties include identifying drain issues, clearing clogged pipes, installing plumbing fixtures, installing sanitary waste and vent piping both below and above grade, installing storm/roof drainage systems, boiler making and hydronic heating systems, installing domestic how and cold water fixtures and specialties, hydronic and hot water circulation pumps, installing floor and wall clean-outs as well as floor sinks and floor drains. Using a variety of pipe and fitting material types to install these systems which include cast iron, copper, steel, stainless steel, PEX, PVC and CPVC. You will also learn the use of classic and modern tooling types for this trade such as threading, mechanical press, mechanical banding, soldering, brazing and welding. At Al Terry Plumbing and Heating we offer schooling for apprentice plumbers in the state of New Hampshire. You will be required to acquire an apprentice plumbing license and will also be required to remain up-to-date with changes in codes and regulations.

  • Start with an apprenticeship to receive on-the-job training which coincides with classroom instruction. These courses often consist of safety, state and city code regulations and blueprint reading.
  • Gain a background knowledge of work-based mathematics as well as some physics and chemistry.
  • Most states and localities require plumbers to have licenses, have at least two-years work experience and take and pass an exam. This will allow plumbers to work independently.
  • For many localities, plumbers must have a valid driver's license as their occupation often entails driving to different locations.
  • Establish solid communication skills in order to direct workers or discuss issues with clients.
  • Practice dexterity to move tools and yourself into tight spaces. Physical strength and agility to carry heavy equipment is necessary.
  • Work on problem-solving abilities to identify areas that need repair.
