Job Description

DUTIES: Plan and conduct scientific experiments which develop and characterize high brightness ion and electron sources.

Perform a variety of experiments as directed by the lead scientists with the objective of the development and characterization of high brightness ion and electron sources.

Design and build ultra-high vacuum test stands for specified surface science experiments/development of next generation electron sources.

Laser and Focused Ion Beam (FIB) matching of macro- and nano-structures with laser and FIB.

Evaluate, report, and present experimental results to other scientists and determine business decision from results.

Using scientific techniques and standard computer software such as Excel, R, Python, and Julia, write scripts to extract and perform statistics on experimental data.

Develop and test new laboratory and instrument control software.

Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair laboratory equipment.

Position supervise 1 Senior Intern.

Willing to travel up to 2% domestic and international.

REQUIREMENTS: PhD or foreign degree equivalent in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field of study. Employer will also accept a Master’s degree or foreign degree equivalent in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field of study plus 3 years of experience in electron emission or related experience as an equivalent alternative. Experience can be obtained through graduate-level coursework and/or internships.

Required knowledge or experience with:

Working with standard electronics equipment, high voltage, ultra-high vacuum equipment, and data acquisition systems;

Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint;

Programming or scripting for data analysis and instrument control (C#, Python, and Julia);

Troubleshooting equipment and implementing solutions; and

Presenting experimental findings.
