       Reading Specialist: (Elementary and Secondary) Job Summary: The role of the Reading Specialist is to provide high-quality instruction, support, and leadership in order to produce high-quality outcomes in the area of Reading and Literacy for students at The Herkimer BOCES. The Reading Specialist assists with establishing school-wide and individual reading goals. Additionally, the Reading Specialist will provide interventions to students and work with teachers to implement additional supports in the classroom. The Reading Specialist will support the leadership in the school by creating a culture of reading that ensures strong reading instruction, excitement about books, and a genuine love for reading. Duties and responsibilities: Design, coordinate and facilitate a school-wide literacy program.

  • Provides support and strategies to teachers to improve instruction that will support literacy growth across the curriculum.

  • Identify deficiencies in reading, and create reading intervention plans and strategies to support students.

  • Assists struggling students to improve their literacy skills.

  • Collaborates with teachers in all programs to promote the learning and implementation of best practices in literacy instruction.

  • Conducts individual and school-wide assessments in order to evaluate levels and targeted interventions.

  • Evaluate and recommend materials to be used with students based upon a best practices model.

  • Creates and continually examines data to measure the success of literacy programs and instruction.

  • Teaches targeted literacy interventions to small groups and individual students daily using research-based strategies and resources.

  • Reviews student achievement and assists with placing students in appropriate reading and writing intervention and support services.

  • Meets regularly with the classroom teachers and administrators to plan literacy instruction that correlates with the individual student’s needs or as requested by the classroom teacher and/or administrator

  • Other duties as assigned by the administrator

    Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher degree with major in assigned area.

  • A valid reading specialist certificate.

  • Excellent communication skills and the willingness to work with a wide range of students.

  • Strong knowledge of multi-tiered systems of support specifically in the area of literacy.
