    Migrant Tutor

    Position PurposeUnder the general supervision of an administrator, the Migrant Education Tutor provides educational services and support to migrant students and their families as well as supports the overall Migrant Education Program during the school year and summer.Essential Functions

    · Provide migrant educational services and support, mainly in the form of tutoring, to migrant students.

    · Provide tutoring services at school, migrant homes, and other available and appropriate locations.

    · Monitor and review student progress.

    · Provide referrals for recruitment and enrollment of migrant students.

    · Assist with the review of evaluation reports, local plans, and other support documentation.

    · Assist with on-site visits from local farms during peak agricultural seasons to identify new migrant out-of-school (OSY) youth and families.

    · Refer families to the BOCES for appropriate migrant services.

    · Work with the BOCES meet migrant student needs.

    · Obtain and interpret information provided by parents, guardians, schools, and others as appropriate.

    · Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs.

    · Maintains familiarity with district and State standardized tests for the purpose of adapting curriculum to maximize student achievement on such tests.

    · Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.

    · Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.

    · Encourages parental involvement in students education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.

    · Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within the assigned schools, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.

    · Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.

    · Collect required documentation from schools including New York State tests scores, report cards, and transcripts.

    · Work with local agencies to assist migrant families.

    Additional Duties

    · Performs other related tasks as assigned by the administrator and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

    Equipment

    · Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

    Travel Requirements

    · Travels to school district buildings, agencies, homes, and professional meetings and other locations as required.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    · Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.

    · Knowledge of English grammar, word usage, word denotations and connotations, spelling, literature and other content areas taught.

    · Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.

    · Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.

    · Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.

    · Ability to organize and coordinate work.

    · Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.

    · Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

    · Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

    · Ability to speak the language of the population being served.

    Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

    · Works in varied environments, both public and private.

    Certification/License:

    · New York State Certification as required.

    · New York State Certification as a teacher is preferred.

    · Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.

    Education:

    · Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.

    · Masters Degree in related area preferred.

    Experience

    · Experience with at-risk and ENL youth is a plus.
