Johns Hopkins University CTY Online Instructor - Middle School Science in Helena, Montana

Founded in 1979, the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) is a center for innovation dedicated to advancing the field of gifted education through research on testing, programs, and other supports for advanced learners. On the premise that advanced learners come from every community and every demographic, we aim to understand and inform how these students need to be nurtured to achieve their full potential as learners and global citizens. CTY also runs in-person and online academic programs for bright learners in order to cultivate a community of advanced learners and connect students in and outside the classroom.

We are seeking a CTY Online Instructor - Middle School Science to support academically advanced students enrolled in Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) online science and engineering courses. Our course offerings can be found at https://cty.jhu.edu/online/courses/science_engineering/.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Facilitate student learning within the virtual science classroom, defined by CTY. Lectures are not required. The course includes the online lessons, assignments, and assessments.

  • Monitor student progress and assist students in accomplishing established learning objectives.

  • Interact independently with students using distance education technologies, primarily Moodle, phone and video conferencing software, and e-mail.

  • Grade student work and provide timely feedback to students and their parents on coursework and progress.

  • Communicate with students, parents, IT, program administrators and supervisor to resolve any course related issues.

  • Submit hours worked via established system according to schedule provided by CTY.

Specific Physical Requirements

  • Ability to access and transmit information using a computer.

  • Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery.

  • The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via telephone and email with internal and external customers and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.

  • Position also requires a degree of mobility common to working in an office environment; bending, kneeling or standing during events and presentations may be required.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Computer or other special needs for the position

  • Must have a computer with broadband Internet access; familiarity with Online education technologies a plus, such as Moodle, Zoom, and Microsoft 365.

Additional Information

  • Work hours vary and are flexible; including weekends and evenings as determined with supervisor.

  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the US and must either live in the US or another area in which JHU has a business entity.

  • The successful candidate(s) for this position will be subject to a pre-employment background check.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in required subject area or related discipline.

  • Two years teaching or tutorial experience in required subject area or related discipline.

  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least two years teaching middle or high school students.

  • Online teaching experience.

  • Master’s degree is strongly preferred.
