Job Overview:Maintains positive patient identification while procuring venous and capillary blood specimens on all patients regardless of age on a routine and stat basis, Verifies orders from scripts and orders procedures in HIS and LIS, Follows established procedures for patient identification and specimen labeling, Performs accessioning and clerical duties as needed, Set-up blood cultures and other microbiology cultures, Participate in the training of new employees and students, Applies the knowledge and skills necessary to assess data reflective of each patient's status and provide the care appropriate to the age of the patient served, ie,, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School graduate or equivalent.

Preferred:

  • Phlebotomy certificate with a nationally recognized program

  • Six months experience

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Per Diem

  • Evening Shift

  • Variable Hours/Days

Essential Functions:

  • Maintains positive patient identification from bedside patient identification, order matching, specimen label printing, bedside specimen labeling, transport and receipt into LIS,

  • 100 percent compliance required,

  • Collects venous and capillary blood specimens from patients of all ages on a routine, times and stat basis within the departmental timelines for completion,

  • Expected phlebotomy success rate is greater than 90 percent,

  • Expected collection rate is 8 to 10 patients per hour,

  • Responsiveness: stat within 30 minutes; timed within 30 minutes variance of the collection time; routine within 60 minutes,

  • Specimens are to be returned to the Lab via pneumatic tube within 10 minutes of drawing,

  • Accurately accessions specimens into the LIS; inputs patients, test orders and physicians information into the LIS for testing,

  • Verifies the accuracy of test orders vs,

  • script requested testing and MD information in order to exceed customer service expectations and expedite testing and reporting,

  • Less than 2 order entry errors per month,

  • Continuously demonstrates a patient focused work attitude that supports and improves Patient Satisfaction for all customer groups

  • Serves as a role model for patient customer service with scores in the 90 percentile on the survey tool,

  • Utilizes free time between assignments for phlebotomy tray decontamination; specimen delivery to chemistry, hematology, blood bank and microbiology departments; culture plating; blood culture set-up and specimen centrifugation,

  • Train and maintain competency when identified as a hazardous materials packager to assist lab staff during emergency preparedness exercises,

  • Demonstrates a proactive work ethic and promote teamwork between departments and shifts by assisting coworkers wherever and whenever possible to complete the patient workload efficiently.
