Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services - DPSCS CORRECTIONAL MAINTENANCE OFFICER I Electrical in Hagerstown, Maryland

A Correctional Maintenance Officer I Electrical is the entry level of work involving the custody, security and supervision of adult inmates in maintenance and repair work in a correctional environment. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions. Employees in this classification receive close supervision from a Correctional Maintenance Officer Supervisor. Work is performed in and around a correctional facility. When assigned to outside maintenance jobs, employees are exposed to all types of weather conditions. The work may require moving objects weighing over 25 pounds.

A Correctional Maintenance Officer Trainee Electrical is the entry level of work involving the custody, security and supervision of adult inmates in correctional institutions. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions. Employees in this classification receive close supervision from a Supervisor. Employees are assigned to day, evening, night or rotating shifts

Position duties include:

  • Inmate supervision including : maintainingcontrol and discipline among inmate workers; conducting searches for contraband items; administering verbal or written disciplinary actions enforcing safety, sanitary, custody and security rules and regulations.
  • Assigning installation maintenance or repair tasks to designated inmates performing at various levels of proficiency in the trade.
  • Training and instructing inmates regarding methods and techniques, use of tools and equipment, and proper care of tools and equipment.
  • Inspecting and approving/disapproving all work performed by inmates for adherence to quality standards.
  • Estimating time, materials and supplies to conductassignedmaintenanceor repair tasks.
  • Ordering materials and supplies, keepingrecords and inventory of materialsand tools.
  • Personallypreform certain installation, maintenanceor repairtakes on electrical infrastructure.
  • Planning and implementingprocedures.
  • Operating hand and power tools and equipment needed; maintaining record of time.
  • Escorting third party vendors and inspecting completed work assignment.

Applicants must meet all minimum (and selective) qualifications to be considered, and to appear on the list of people eligible for hire. Please read all requirements before applying.

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Preferred experience:

  • Two years of electricalexperience.
  • Ability to perform certain installation, maintenance or repair tasks on electrical infrastructure.
  • Operate hand and power tools and equipment needed.

Notes:

  • The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional institutional specialty codes in the criminal justice field of work at a rate of two years of military experience for the required experience.

Special Requirements:

  • Selection standards for Correctional Officer certification are established by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. These selection criteria are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01 and include the following:

U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status Must be at least 21 years of age A completed background investigation Oral interview Physical examination.

  • Employees in this classification are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, must provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
