Job Summary:

This is advanced level, data scientist work with the responsibility for developing, planning, and implementing research projects to advance ocean science and engineering. Incumbents are expected to conduct, evaluate, and interpret scientific data and studies with considerable independent judgment and discretion under the general supervision of a higher-level, scientist or an administrative or technical supervisor. Interaction with members of local, state, and federal regulatory entities, special interest groups, and the general public, including speaking to large and small groups is required. Incumbents at this level may act as project managers in the performance of related duties and supervision will be exercised over others. This position is located at the Marine Research Center, in Gulfport MS and is part of the USM Roger F. Wicker Center for Ocean Enterprise. The Center works with industry, state and federal government and academic partners for research, development, testing and evaluation of ocean sensing buoys as well as uncrewed surface and subsurface marine vehicles including but not limited to platform, payload, command and control systems, power system and data integration/analysis.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, plan, and manage research projects and research/technician personnel. Provide leadership in coordinating research activities and serve as project coordinator and supervisor of less senior staff.

  • Routinely prepares technical reports, manuscripts, oral presentations, and other written forms of communication for the dissemination of research findings following standard guidelines.

  • Contribute to Ocean Enterprise goals by developing proposals, keeping appropriate individuals on the OE staff informed of activities of activities and providing status reports for documenting milestones and meeting funding obligations regarding projects.

  • Plan, manage and execute test and evaluation of UxS, other autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles or platforms and performs analysis of data collected.

  • Provides programmatic and technical support to project directors or principal investigators and collaborate with Ocean Enterprise, USM and external researchers.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in data science, engineering, remote sensing, physical science or closely related field and a minimum five years of experience in data science research, applications, or similar occupation. Related education and related experience may be substituted on an equal basis. Valid Driver’s License is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret research periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures associated with research activities. Proficient writing skills are necessary to perform stated duties.

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of data science professionals, customers, and the general public.

  • Ability to utilize, process, visualize, and analyze various geospatial data as well as can travel, and work from large and small vessels.

    Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. from an accredited college or university in, data science, engineering, remote sensing, physical science or closely related field and two years of experience in data science research, applications, or similar occupation. Valid Driver’s License is required.

Proficiency with Programming Languages/Platforms/Libraries such as C, Java, Python, R/RSudio, MATLAB, AWS Sagemaker, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Tensorflow, Keras, Scikit Learn, Pandas, Numpy, SQL, NOSQL (Mongo DB), ArcPy, Tableau, Docker, and ArcGIS.

Certifications in one or more of the above toolsets.
