You’ll be working alongside a host of talented people ranging from our early career professionals to established engineers and project managers working across the highways business to improve the local and strategic road networks.

Working in partnership with National Highways and Local Authority clients across the region, including Hampshire and West Sussex, you could find yourself immersed in a diverse range of projects including active travel, digital design (including 3D modelling), strategic network improvements, major and minor maintenance, alignment, road safety as well as public realm. The role will offer an interesting and varied workload – from major strategic highways projects such as Smart Motorways through to a diverse range of small and medium local authority highways infrastructure improvement schemes.

As Principal Engineer you will develop and deliver projects through various stages of design from feasibility to planning/detailed design and into construction. You will be experienced in providing CDM advice to designers and clients under the CDM regulations 2015. You’ll also support the Group Managers in leadership of people, projects, clients and business performance.

You will:

  • Lead and manage projects to ensure coordination of multi-disciplinary inputs

  • Manage resources effectively and efficiently to meet fluctuating work loads

  • Work with Clients and design teams to deliver compliant designs on time and within budget meeting CDM, QA and technical review requirements

  • Provide advice to clients, designers and principal contractors on matters relating to the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015

  • Advise, manage and provide training for Designers

  • Authorise PCI and Health and Safety files issued to Contractors and Clients

  • Lead the design process and encourage the rest of the team to deliver appropriate and cost-effective solutions to the agreed programme

  • Participate in tender bids and business development opportunities

  • Negotiate fees and managing the commercial position on project

  • Manage the issue of HSE Notifications on behalf of the Client and involving all duty holders in the process as necessary

  • Advise Clients on the suitability of CPP’s submitted by Contractors and Principal Contractors and on welfare facilities to be provided for works prior to commencement on site

  • Carry out site visits and audits to check compliance with the Regulations

  • A degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline

  • You will be or actively working towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status

  • Member of the Association of Project Safety (MaPS) or similar.

  • NEBOSH in Construction.

  • Highways design experience in accordance with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB).

  • Experience of Project Manager role to NEC4 would be desirable but not essential.

  • The ability to write concise reports and present to clients.
