Brown-Forman Senior Legal Counsel - Mexico Commercial in Guadalajara, Mexico

Meaningful Work From Day One

The Senior Legal Counsel will provide legal counsel and legal support to the business to ensure all commercial activities, contracts, and agreements are compliant and meet the legal requirements for the purpose of promoting and selling alcoholic beverages in Mexico. This position will proactively manage and advise the business on any risks or local regulation requirements for all commercial activities

What You Can Expect

  • Serve as the primary legal advisor for the commercial team and provide legal counsel for the execution of all commercial agreements. This legal counsel includes, but is not limited to service agreements, license agreements, commercial agreements with on premise and off premise accounts, purchasing agreements, and various other agreements as necessary for commercial and marketing matters.

  • As an active participant of the Credit Committee, and in partnership with the Credit Department, jointly implements the collection strategy and coordinates external collection counsel.

  • The Senior Legal Counsel will obtain corresponding authorizations from the Health Ministry for the advertising campaigns, point of sale, and on-premise materials for Brown-Forman’s product portfolio. In order to achieve the above, the Legal Commercial Director will meet as required with the Health Ministry to present and secure approval of the advertising campaigns.

  • Partner with the Finance and Tax Departments, to implement and complete corporate duties under the corporate commercial regulations, such as shareholders meetings, power of attorney, and special corporate projects. Provide counsel regarding legal implications in connection to new tax regulations.

  • Manage the coordination of external counsel for collections, labor, penal, and special issues, including internal and external audits.

  • Partner with the Director of Compliance and local Controllership department to aid in the enforcement of the Code of Conduct, including anti-corruption and gifts & hospitality internal policies.

  • As an active participant of the Donations Committee, and in partnership with the Corporate Affairs department, jointly implement Brown-Forman´s charity donations strategy for the fiscal year.

What You Bring to the Table

  • Top-tier law firm training;

  • Minimum 5 years of legal experience;

  • Experience as a lawyer in a corporation in the Region working on commercial and regulatory matters for consumer products;

  • Strong business acumen and ability to spot business issues and offer timely, practical legal solutions;

  • Ability to self-start, work independently and efficiently with limited guidance;

  • Strong collaboration and consensus-building skills and the ability to communicate in both Spanish and English clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing;

  • Experience handling multiple tasks and multiple clients;

  • Experience with compliance, preferably in the beverage alcohol industry, as well as corporate and regulatory compliance (e.g., anti-corruption); and

  • Willingness to travel in the region and periodically to Louisville, KY in the U.S.
