GE Vernova Lead Yaw System Mechanical Design Engineer in Greenville, South Carolina

Job Description Summary

The successful candidate will be a part of GE Vernova’s Onshore Wind Global Machine Head yaw subsystem team. The role offers hardware ownership opportunity including design, analysis, supplier qualification, testing and validation focusing on mechanical rotating components for utility scale wind turbines.

The mechanical design engineer will primarily support the yaw drive and yaw bearing systems through the entire life cycle from conceptual design through detailed design and development, testing, qualification, manufacturing, and installed fleet support. The engineer will drive technical excellence and continuous improvement in the design, analysis, cost, and reliability of the components under their responsibility.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Execute projects pertaining to new product introduction, new technology integration, and field issue resolution with a heavy focus on quality and reliability verified by physical testing

  • Be responsible for designing yaw system components for wind turbines focusing on hydraulic pressure unit (HPU) systems, yaw brakes, yaw drives, and yaw bearings encompassing component design, system interaction, and system reliability

  • Hold ownership of and drive lessons learned, best practices, and standardization into design related documentation such as design practices, drawings, and technical specifications

  • Responsible for design, development of testing/validation plans to prove component function and reliability

  • Provide innovative design solutions to meet aggressive timing, product cost, and reliability targets

  • Ensure quality of new and revised drawings, BoMs, and specifications applying all GE and industry processes, standards, and best practices

  • Work cross functionally, developing strong relationships with quality teams, manufacturing engineers, sourcing, suppliers, field support, and others to improve product quality and first-time yield

  • Support manufacturing, sourcing, and the field with issue resolution and quick corrective actions for design related causes (NCR, SDR, PAC)

  • Drive quick, complete technical root cause analysis of field failures and identify design related corrective actions to prevent recurrence

  • Identify and execute cost saving ideas and strategies

  • Drive efforts to introduce advanced technology, materials, manufacturing methods, new design tools/methods to advance the strategic position of yaw subsystem components

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering

  • Minimum 5 years mechanical analysis and design experience

Desired Characteristics

  • Working knowledge of technical drawings, GD&T, and manufacturing

  • Experience with 3D-CAD tools like Unigraphics / Siemens NX

  • Excellent communication, project management, interpersonal, and presentation skills

  • Proven ability to lead global projects with team members across cultural boundaries

  • Ability to work under pressure and challenging conditions

  • Established problem solving process knowledge and execution

  • Strong desire and ability to drive improvement and change

  • Fluent English written and spoken

  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering

  • Working knowledge of Ansys or other finite element analysis tools

  • Design experience working on components in the Machine Head yaw subsystem (yaw drives, bolted joints, hydraulic + mechanical yaw braking systems, yaw bearings)

  • Experience with system design including interface definition, system stiffness, DFMEA, and design for manufacturability / installation / serviceability.

  • Proven track record of collaborating with business product managers and suppliers/vendors to optimize component costs and influence purchasing strategy
