Summary:

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) provide clinical management of patients under Maine EMS protocols and within the scope of the licensure during all emergency calls, routine ambulance runs, intra-facility transports, and in the hospital setting. The EMT is responsible for meeting applicable State of Maine, and department standards for managing all assigned personnel, equipment, and supplies, and for promoting teamwork with other pre-hospital caregivers, physicians, and hospital personnel.

The position requires self-discipline, the ability to solve problems, excellent interpersonal skills, and consistently high levels of integrity. EMTs will work as team members to energize other crew members and engage them in helping to accomplish all shift goals without self-aggrandizing behavior.

All EMS personnel are expected to act as a role model among our employees, always representing him or herself and the company at the highest level. They will lead by example and play a large role in keeping our service constantly ready. Their actions keep our employees safe, maintain our compliance with applicable rules and regulations, and ensure that we provide the highest quality service expeditiously.

The EMT’s role is to provide exceptional emergency medical care, skilled in-patient assessment, airway management, CPR, automatic external defibrillation, oxygen delivery, dressings and hemorrhage control, splinting, spinal immobilization, childbirth, lifting and moving patients, and extrication. The EMT will be competent with these skills for all emergency situations of ill and or injured individuals in critical situations, within the scope of Maine EMS protocols while working under the direct supervision of local Medical Control.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs duties using proper technique and following protocols related to BSI, I/C, OSHA guidelines, HIV/HBV, TB precautions.

  • Inventories, stocks and cleans ambulances insuring that it is properly equipped at all times.

  • Takes on call assignments.

  • Functions as crew chief unless another EMT is present who holds a higher license.

  • Arranges for patient transfers from CA Dean to receiving medical facility.

  • Manages back up crews when needed.

  • Provides appropriate treatment using EMS protocols and standards for EMT-B.

  • Works under direct control of EMT-P of EMT-I and/or Medical Control.

  • Completes all patient care run reports in MEMSRRS (Maine Emergency Medical Services Run Reporting System) within timeframe specified by Maine EMS.

  • Provides all other emergency care within scope of practice.

Other Information:

  • Performs Daily/Monthly required checks of ambulances and equipment.

  • Works to meet patient's psychological, emotional, or physical needs.

  • Assists Emergency Room, East Wing, and West Wing nursing staff within the EMT’s Scope of Practice as needed.

  • Maintains professional appearance of EMS Garage, Crew Quarters, and Common Areas as needed.

  • Manage critically ill/injured patients effectively with rapid assessments, aggressive resuscitation, packaging, and transport to appropriate definitive care emergency departments.

  • Function as an EMT, providing advance life support to emergency and non-emergency patients and operating (driving) ambulance in appropriate and safe manner.

  • Works to ensure a safe environment for all staff and patients.

  • Communicate effectively in oral, written, and computer forms, as appropriate for the audience's needs. Medical Records, ER Reports, MEFIRS, Billing, QA/QI

  • Reviews and verifies completion of 100% patient care reports prior to shift completion.

  • Manages and secures backup ambulance crews as needed for transports, extended calls, and special events.

  • Performs other duties as assigned, requested, or required.
