Confidential Employer Shelter Counselor in GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania

DESCRIPTION: This full time staff person will staff Blackburn Center's Emergency Shelter, which provides a safe place for victims of domestic violence and their children fleeing domestic violence.  Working hours are primarily during first or second shift, with occasional third shift coverage as needed. This is a non-exempt position as defined in the Fair Labor Standards Act. 

RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:

  • Provide crisis intervention, empowerment counseling and advocacy to current and past residents of the shelter and their children.
  • Respond to residents in a non-judgmental and trauma-informed manner.
  • Demonstrate non-violent forms of discipline with children and support parents who are learning non-violent disciplinary techniques.
  • Create and maintain an atmosphere of support and assistance for all clients and staff members.
  • Provide a non-violent, non-sexist role model to parents and their children.
  • Help residents cope with the challenges of communal living; addressing resident problems equitably and in a timely manner when the need arises.
  • Assist cooperatively in the upkeep of the shelter, including tasks such as laundry, cleaning, and organizing storage areas.
  • Complete assigned monthly reports in an accurate and timely manner, including data entry.

QUALIFICATIONS include but are not limited to:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • PA and FBI Criminal Record Checks and Child Abuse History Clearance.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to deal with crisis and confrontation in a professional, positive, and effective manner.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays and various shifts.

     

* Desired:*

  • Bachelor's Degree in counseling or related field or equivalent paid or volunteer experience.
  • Experience in counseling, preferably with individuals in crisis.
  • Experience in crisis intervention.
  • Knowledge of issues and dynamics of domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, child sexual abuse and incest.
