Description:

Plans, coordinates, supervises, and participates in the installation, maintenance, alteration and repair of commercial water, gas and plumbing systems, drain sewer and stormlines. Has site responsibility for plumbing and other related work including contracted jobs. Install, repair, replace plumbing fixtures in University and Foundation-owned residential buildings, academic, auxiliary, research and farm facilities.

Keeps the University in a safe and sanitary condition; provide clean and safe drinking water. Complies with state and local plumbing codes to ensure the safety and well-being of students, faculty and staff. Prepares project specifications for plumbing contractors. NC Plumber’s license required to consult and coordinate with City of Greensboro plumbing officials.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

The Physical Plant is responsible for providing services relative to building and grounds maintenance, utilities, transportation, trash removal, central receiving, recycling, disposition of surplus property and moving and hauling. In addition, the Physical Plant has expanding responsibilities that includes providing support services for the instruction and research programs to achieve the University’s mission, goals and objectives. Maintains and improves and expands all campus buildings, campus image and education opportunities for all people. More specifically, the functions involve energy conservation, building renovation/repair, occupational safety and health, landscape design, event planning, vehicle and equipment maintenance/repair, motor pool and housekeeping services to 15 residence halls, 40 academic buildings, 15 research buildings, 21 support buildings and 19 university farm buildings; campus lighting, water and sewer, and electrical distribution system. Moreover, the Skilled Trades Department, inclusive of the Plumbing unit, is responsible for repair, maintenance and preventive maintenance of campus facilities.

Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred:

Trained with a knowledge of the standard practices and methods of plumbing installation, maintenance, repair and appropriate tools; project coordination and estimating. Experienced in the use of testing devices, tools and materials used in operating, repair and installation in the plumbing arena. Knowledgeable of local, state and national plumbing codes. Able to read and interpret schematics, drawings and sketches.

Completion of two year technical school and ten years of progressive work experience in operations, maintenance, repair and installation in the plumbing field.
