Michigan State University(MSU) Research Associate-Fixed Term in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Position Summary

The HELP PAIN Lab, directed by Natoshia R. Cunningham, PhD, at Michigan State University is recruiting one postdoctoral research associate in pediatric pain starting in summer/fall 2024. The start date is flexible and a two-year commitment is preferred. We are looking for a candidate with a strong research background in the assessment and/or nonpharmacologic treatment of pediatric pain conditions and mental health comorbidities. Interest in implementation of nonpharmacologic pain management methods (e.g. in healthcare settings, school settings, or communities with limited access to behavioral healthcare) is preferred.

The primary project is a multi-site implementation trial funded by the Department of Defense to train integrated medical care providers to implement cognitive behavioral strategies to manage mood, fatigue, and pain in individuals with childhood-onset lupus. There will also be opportunities to be involved in other pediatric chronic pain research projects, which may include training school providers (including school nurses and mental health professionals) in nonpharmacologic pediatric pain management strategies, addressing adverse childhood events in the context of pediatric chronic pain conductions, addressing mental health in pediatric rheumatology settings, and understanding biomarkers of pediatric chronic pain, depending on the individual's interests and career goals.

For the primary project, the research associate will be responsible for helping train professionals including medical providers (e.g. nurses, medical assistants) and mental health specialists (e.g. social workers, psychologists) to serve as mental health champions on their respective medical teams. Site visits (2-4 annually), where the research associate conducts a full-day training, are an anticipated component of the role. The research associate would also be expected to participate in other research activities including data analysis, manuscript preparation, and attending and presenting at scientific conferences.
