American Seating Company Manufacturing Engineer in Grand Rapids, Michigan

POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for developing, evaluating, and improving manufacturing processes by applying knowledge of product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling, and materials. Work with internal teams, and equipment suppliers during the development and improvement process. Support company objectives for Safety, Quality, Production and Delivery.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Manufacturing Engineer analyzes the value stream and identifies opportunities to eliminate non-value-added steps in the process.
  • Support the following lean techniques where applicable: 5S, waste identification and elimination, value stream mapping, Kaizen, error proofing, one piece flow, set-up time reduction, Kanban, balanced workflow, PFMEA and other concepts.
  • The Manufacturing Engineer will provide team leadership support for process improvement projects, safety, quality, productivity, and cost improvement.
  • Support required activities associated with manufacturing changes or new product launch.
  • Monitor and improve fixtures, tools and methods to meet productivity, specifications and quality standards.
  • Research and recommend new tools and methodologies for product/process changes.
  • Evaluate existing machinery and processes to recommend improvements that enhance both operator performance and ergonomics/safety of overall production.
  • Optimizes floor layout, material flow manufacturing efficiencies, takt time, floor space utilization and overhead.
  • Develop or revise technical documentation to specify manufacturing processes.
  • Development testing and validation to determine effectiveness and compliance to quality standards for the manufacturing processes.
  • Partnering and directing contractors/vendors to complete projects.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • S. in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering.
  • 2-5 years of experience in manufacturing working with areas such as powder coat, upholstery, metal fabrication, welding, automated welding, metal finishing, laser cutting, tube bending or production assembly.
  • CAD, Solidworks, Design for Manufacturing Systems, and Lean Manufacturing experience preferred
  • Project management experience, PMP certification a plus

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and lead project teams.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing equipment and processes.
  • Mechanically inclined with the ability to troubleshoot.
