Scope of Work

The Clinical Nurse Specialist is an influential leader for a program or area of nursing practice. The advanced knowledge and skills required for this role include clinical expertise in a focus area, evidence-based practice, collaboration, consultation, education, mentoring and change leadership. The specialized knowledge and advanced practice nursing skills are used within three major areas of impact: patient/family, nurses and nursing practice and the organization/system.

In collaboration with other members of the health care team, the CNS leads, provides, enhances, and improves health care delivery by evaluating nursing practices, developing methodologies, establishing standards of care, and providing consultative services. The CNS is a clinical expert in the theory-based and/or research-based nursing practice within a specialty area.Clinical Nurse Specialists are REQUIRED to obtain their nursing administration or professional/specialty certification within 12 months of assuming the role, or within 12 months of achieving eligibility to sit for the exam if not eligible upon hire into the role.

    Qualifications

One of the following is Required:

  • MSN-NP from an accredited Clinical Nurse Specialist Program.

  • DNP from an accredited Clinical Nurse Specialist Program.

  • MSN - ONLY if Clinical Nurse Specialty certification is obtained through the state of Michigan via portfolio submission of evidence that demonstrates knowledge and skill competence in the clinical nurse specialist role. (specialty certification is on the nursing license).

  • 5 years of relevant experience Clinical Nursing Required.

  • Education and Program development experience Preferred.

  • MI Registered Nurse (RN) Required.

  • AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) Required within 90 days.

  • AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Required within 6 months.

  • Certification in field of specialty Required.

In addition, one of the following is Required:

  • Board Certified Adult Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist (BC-AGCNS) from ANCC or AACN Required.

  • Board Certified Adult Clinical Nurse Specialists (BC-ACNS) from ANCC or AACN Required.

  • Board Certified Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist (BC-PCNS) from ANCC or AACN Required.
