National Park Service Automotive Mechanic in Grand Lake, Colorado

Summary This Automotive Mechanic position is located in Rocky Mountain National Park in the Facilities Management Division. The position is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing and overhauling major automotive and light duty vehicle systems. The position will also assist with repairing and overhauling heavy equipment. Government housing may be available on a temporary or permanent basis, but it is not guaranteed. Housing assignments are made though a bid process. Responsibilities Major duties of the position include, but are not limited to: Troubleshoot, repair, and/or overhaul major automotive components and systems to include gasoline and diesel engines, differentials, trans-axles, electronic fuel injection, exhaust and emission control systems. Perform repairs, overhauls, and preventative maintenance of small engine equipment. Assist with repairing and overhauling heavy equipment including, but not limited to, backhoes, loaders, graders, bulldozers, dump trucks, tractor/trailer combinations, and snow removal equipment. Utilize diagnostic codes and internet research to maintain, diagnose and repair vehicles and equipment. Operate electronic test equipment such as computerized engine analyzers and scanners, exhaust analyzers, and oscilloscopes. Area Information: Established on January 29, 1915, Rocky Mountain National Park is a living showcase of the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains. The park embraces 415 square miles of pristine, uninhabited mountains in north-central Colorado and, as such, is one of the most spectacular, yet easily accessible high mountain areas in North America. With elevations ranging from 7,800 feet at park headquarters to 14,259 feet at the summit of Longs Peak, the park has glacier-sculptured valleys, rugged gorges, alpine lakes, and vast areas of alpine tundra. Trail Ridge Road, the highest paved continuous road in the United States, stays above tree line for 11 miles and reaches 12,183 feet in elevation. Elk, deer, bighorn sheep, moose, coyotes, and smaller animals are found throughout the park, as well as threatened and endangered species, such as the Greenback Cutthroat Trout and Boreal Toad. Due to the park's easy accessibility to the Front Range communities of Colorado, Rocky experiences over 4 million visitors annually. This position will be filled on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park. The gateway community is the town of Grand Lake, CO, which has K-12 schools, a post office, restaurants, medical facilities, and grocery stores. Denver, which has a major airport, cultural events, and several professional sports teams, is approximately a two-hour drive away. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You must possess or obtain and maintain a current Class B Commercial Driver's License. This condition of employment must be met within 12 months of entrance on duty. You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Qualifications To qualify for this position at the WG-10 grade level, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to Do the Work Without More than Normal Supervision. Applicants must be able to perform the full range of Automotive Mechanic tasks under normal supervision. These tasks include providing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting/diagnosis, and providing reliable repairs for a variety of motorized equipment such as: fleet vehicles which include gasoline, diesel, electric, propane, and hybrid sedans, vans, 4x4 pickups, and SUV's. (SCREEN OUT) Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Includes reading blueprints) Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment. Additional Information This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster. Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will be paid if the selectee lives outside of the local commuting area and is otherwise eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses in accordance with the Federal Travel Regulation. Physical Effort: The incumbent is required to make repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions, and the work performed frequently involves standing for long periods of time, bending, stooping, crawling under vehicles, and making repairs in tight spaces. The incumbent frequently lifts, handles, and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and occasionally moves moderately heavy items weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds) with assistance or with mechanical devices. Working Conditions: Work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles. Occasionally the work may be performed outside under adverse weather conditions. The incumbent is continually exposed to dirt dust, and grease, and to the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, and strains. To reduce the dangers to irritations from these conditions, the incumbent follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as shoes, glasses, and respirators. Documentation for the Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) eligibility, submission of ALL SF-50s and performance information for each period of temporary/term employment that qualifies for LMWFA. Performance documentation can be obtained by contacting the supervisors for the positions you served in during your 24 months. If they did not complete performance appraisals, ask them to provide a statement of performance for each period of service. The statement must specify the dates for each employment period and your level of performance (dates should match the dates on the SF-50s).
