Serco Mechanic - Light Apprentice in Goose Bay, Newfoundland

Position Description

As the Royal Canadian Air Forces’ prime service provider at 5 Wing Goose Bay, Labrador, our team delivers comprehensive air operations, emergency services, logistics and engineering expertise to the Department of National Defence. We work on behalf of DND’s “no fail” mission at Goose Bay: supporting NORAD operations for the projection of air power on the north and northeast coasts of Canada, while supporting military training for the Canadian Armed Forces, Allies and NORAD. 5 Wing Goose Bay provides effective training facilities, adaptable infrastructures, and a unique, austere, and challenging training location. Currently, Serco Canada has over 1,200 employees across four provinces, including a strong and growing Indigenous workforce.

In this role, you will:

  • Review work orders and discuss with Supervisor.

  • Assist in inspecting vehicles and equipment, road test and test systems and components using testing devices to diagnose and isolate faults.

  • Assist in adjusting, repairing, or replacing parts and components of vehicle and equipment systems including fuel, brake, steering and suspension systems, transmissions, differentials, drive axles and shafts, emission control and exhaust systems, engines and electrical, and other specialized automotive repair equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.

  • Assist in testing and adjusting repaired systems to manufacturer’s performance specifications.

  • Perform scheduled maintenance service, such as oil changes, lubrications and tune-ups.

  • Document the work performed, general vehicle conditions and future repair requirements.

  • Assist in inspecting and testing mechanical units, such as engines, transmissions, axles and brake systems to locate faults and malfunctions and confirm findings with Supervisor.

  • Use hand and power tools as required in the performance of duties.

  • May be required to work offsite and at remote locations.

  • Ensure all assigned deliverables and other reports are completed accurately and on time.

  • Visibly demonstrate Serco Values and work practices while completing duties.

  • Other related duties relevant to this position as may be required.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Approved and registered as an Apprentice with the Department of Institutional and Industrial Education or in possession of post-secondary training certificate in Mechanic is required.

  • Possession of a valid Class 5 NL driver’s license is required.

  • Possession of or the ability to obtain and maintain a Ramp Defensive Driving Course (DND/RDDC) certification to operate vehicles on the airfield is required.

  • Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening test.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain an Enhanced Reliability security clearance is required. May be required to upgrade to Secret Level II (dependent upon customer’s security requirements).

  • Ability to obtain drivers abstract.

The wage rate will be commensurate with level of training verified by the Department of Advance Education, skills and Labour Industrial Training section.
