Description

Summary:

Transports patients, supplies and equipment safely and efficiently throughout the hospital. Follows all procedures, schedules, policies and standards of performance. Performs other duties in support of hospital and department goals and objectives so as to achieve “superior customer service” for patients, visitors and facility teammates.

Responsibilities:

  1. Transports patients and relays pertinent patient information to appropriate teammates.

  2. Follows proper identification procedures to ensure transportation of the correct patient.

  3. Obtains appropriate transport equipment (e.g., wheelchair, stretcher, etc.) for the task.

  4. Monitors patient during transport and calls appropriate teammates if patient appears to be in distress.

  5. Provides appropriate life support equipment for patient transport. Monitors patient and calls appropriate teammates if patient is in distress.

  6. Obtains appropriate documentation to accompany the patient to his/her destination.

  7. Operates computerized transport system.

  8. Instructs Radiology teammates in the operation of portable oxygen equipment.

  9. May assist and monitor radiology patients.

  10. Prepares CT does kits for outside offices and prepares inpatients for CT dosing. May file and retrieve Radiology department film files.

  11. Cleans/sanitizes transport equipment after use. Returns all transport equipment to the proper storage area when not in use.

  12. Evaluates transport equipment for inventory and equipment maintenance. Notifies the Emergency Department Supervisor if repairs are required.

  13. Completes additional and routine tasks as assigned, e.g., removing linen and replacing oxygen tanks.

  14. Demonstrates professionalism, courtesy and tact in all patient, teammate, and provider interactions.

  15. Participates in continuing education and in-services as required.

  16. Applies knowledge of principles of standard precautions. Routinely uses personal protective equipment (PPE) to avoid risk of exposure to self and others.

  17. Exhibits knowledge and basic understanding regarding the needs of neonatal, adolescent, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients, and the cultural needs of all patients.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Licensure/Certification

BLS within 6 months of employment required.

Experience

One month health care patient transport experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to lift and transport patients safely and efficiently.

• Ability to recognize patients in distress and call for appropriate help.

• Good interpersonal skills.

• Demonstrates a cooperative attitude and team effort in the performance of all duties.

• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively.

• Basic knowledge of computers.

Valid NC Driver’s License: No

If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
