I. Job Summary

The Extern performs nursing care and skills under the direct supervision of the registered nurse who is assigned as his/her resource nurse.

II. Essential Job Duties

  1. Orients to the unit environment.

  2. Manages patient care with resource nurse’s guidance within a safe environment.

  3. Utilizes the Nursing Process in patent care delivery.

  4. Manages patient’ skin integrity with resource nurse’s guidance.

  5. Assists with assessment and management of pain with resource nurse’s assistance.

  6. Assists with meeting patients’ nutritional/elimination needs with resource nurse’s guidance.

  7. Works effectively with the interdisciplinary team.

  8. Maintains IV therapy with guidance from resource nurse after successful completion of the pharmacology test.

  9. Performs unit specific competencies within scope with guidance from resource nurse.

  10. Presents and promotes a professional demeanor at all times, establishes high standards of customer service, supports responsibility, pride, and teamwork, and offers reasonable solutions for problems.

  11. Demonstrates appropriate interaction with and provides recommended care and services to all patients.

  12. Supports the delivery of age appropriate, culturally sensitive, and ethical care for patients.

  13. Applies knowledge of principles of standard precautions. Routinely uses PPE to avoid risk of exposure to self and others.

III. Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High school education or equivalent.

  • Must be a rising senior nursing student from an accredited professional school of nursing (Completion of first year in an ADN program and junior classes in a BSN program) with active enrollment in nursing school. Prefer overall grade point average of at least 3.0.

  • Official transcript required. Must have two letters of reference including at least one from a nursing instructor.

Licensure/ Certification

  • Active listing on North Carolina Department of Health and Human Resources Nurse’s Aide registry as NAI or NAII.

  • Basic Life Support.

  • Experience

  • Must be in good standing with the nursing school, having completed the first year of school in an ADN program and junior classes in a BSN program.

  • Must have completed at least two clinical nursing rotations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Basic knowledge of age-specific needs of the patient populations served.

• Awareness of cultural differences.

• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with teammates, supervisors and patients.

• Ability to perform in stressful situations.

• Good interpersonal and customer service skills.

• Basic computer skills and able to learn new software rapidly.

• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.

• Ability to stand and walk for duration of shift
