UNC Health Care Lead Medical Technologist in Goldsboro, North Carolina

Summary:

The Lead Medical Technologist supervises the daily activities of the Medical Technologists. Ensures the technical quality, timeliness and accuracy of the work in the section. Also works as a Medical Technologist. Performs a wide variety of complex critical tests and analyses in the areas of Blood Banking, Clinical Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology and Parasitology which provide clinical information for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases. Responsible for overall quality, efficiency, and safety in the performance of assigned technical duties

Responsibilities:

  1. Plans and organizes the workload of the section to achieve maximum efficiency.

  2. Ensures that quality control procedures and maintenance is performed, recorded, interpreted and reviewed for all testing.

  3. Evaluates and implements new procedures. Writes and revises procedure documentation.

  4. Reviews or ensures the review of all completed test results.

  5. Frequently communicates with department leadership regarding issues, concerns, problems and progress against goals.

  6. Performs all the duties of a medical technologist. Performs tests on patient samples, completing complex critical analyses following written protocol. Confirms abnormal test results and verifies in the computer system.

  7. Operates all instruments in the areas assigned.

  8. Verifies and documents test results using appropriate laboratory system.

  9. Confirms abnormal results and calls “critical values” to appropriate teammates.

  10. Performs and analyzes quality control procedures.

  11. Troubleshoots all procedures in the areas assigned.

  12. Maintains adequate levels of supplies.

  13. Responsible for overseeing a Quality Management Program for the purpose of promoting quality services in all aspects of the POCT operation (pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical) and for ensuring compliance with applicable standards set forth by laboratory and hospital accrediting agencies (The Joint Commission).

  14. Prepares the program for inspection by regulatory agencies. Ensures regulatory requirements are followed and met in regards to proper use of point of care testing.

  15. Implements new programs, tests, methods, instrumentation and procedures by investigating alternatives, preparing proposals, developing and performing parallel testing, and monitoring progress.

  16. Maintains work area in a clean and sanitary condition.

  17. Instructs or ensures the instruction of new employees and students.

  18. Uses appropriate interaction with and provides recommended or required services to all patients. Possesses a basic understanding regarding the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients and the cultural needs of all patients.

  19. Uses sound judgement when making clinical or management decisions. Defers to appropriate authority as necessary.

  20. Operates HIS and LIS technology proficiently.

  21. Understands, follows and role models down time procedures.

  22. Understands and follows all departmental and hospital procedures.

  23. Keeps supervisor or Director informed of any issues, concerns or problems.

  24. Serves as a role model and resource. Actively promotes teamwork and cooperation within the department.

  25. Provides input to the Director on budgeting and expense management.

  26. Completes performance evaluations for the area supervised, completes teammate incident reports, and ensures correction of deficiencies.

  27. In partnership with the Director and Human Resources leadership, provides recommendations for recruiting, corrective action, termination and other human resources decisions.

  28. Completes continuing education and in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements.

  29. Actively participates in staff meetings.

  30. Participates in performance improvement activities.

  31. Presents and promotes a professional demeanor at all times, establishes high standards of customer service, supports responsibility, pride, and teamwork, remains calm under pressure, and offers reasonable solutions for problems.

  32. Maintains a safe environment for self and teammates. Applies knowledge of the principles of universal precautions, routinely and consistently makes use of these principles. Also knowledgeable of appropriate use of personal protective equipment and infection control barriers and devices.

Education

• Master’s degree preferred. Bachelor’s degree in related discipline (Medical Technology, Laboratory, Chemical or Biological Science) required.

Licensure/Certification

• Certification from ASCP required.

Experience

• At least five years experience in medical technology.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of the materials, procedures and instrumentation used in the section.

• Good analytical skills and the ability to apply the theories and techniques of clinical laboratory science (including evaluation of quality control data) to produce reliable test results which aid the clinician in diagnosis and treatment.

• Ability to interpret, recognize, analyze and correct difficulties within the section.

• Ability to demonstrate leadership qualities, e.g., maturity, job knowledge, professionalism, communication skills, etc. to lead, guide and motivate others.

• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.

• Proficient with LIS, HIS, EPIC and MS Office. Able to learn new software rapidly.

• Ability to stand and work on uncarpeted floors for duration or significant portion of shift.

Valid NC Driver’s License: No

If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
