Description

Job Summary

The Lab Assistant I collects blood from all patients, performing venipuncture or capillary puncture using approved techniques, instructs patients in the collection of urine specimens, processes and delivers specimens to the appropriate sections of the Laboratory, and collects all laboratory specimens using proper identification and tagging procedures. Answers the phones, receives orders for testing and places those orders in the computer.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

High School Diploma and successful completion of a phlebotomy course.

Licensure/

Certification

Certification from an accredited agency (NPA, ASCP, ASCP, NHA, National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel) required.

Experience

At least 1 year as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

· Proficient in basic laboratory procedures and laboratory terminology.

· Good interpersonal skills.

· Ability to perform detailed work; work with frequent interruptions, multi-task, and problem solve.

· Ability to take direction and assimilate instructions quickly.

· Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.

· Proficient with LIS, HIS and MS Office and able to learn new software rapidly.

· Ability to stand and walk on hard surfaces for duration of shift.
