Job Description:

Infection Control Preventionist

Position Summary:

The Infection Preventionist (IP) reports to the Director for Performance Improvement and Quality, and is responsible for the surveillance, identification, prevention and control of infections at Northeast Hospitals. The IP is also responsible for the implementation and monitoring of infection control practice in collaboration with department managers, medical staff and the Infection Prevention & Control Committee. The IP maintains currency with all federal, state and local (CMS, JC, CDC, APIC, OSHA, etc.) health department guidelines and regulations and ensures compliance. The IP assures that that the Infection Prevention and Control manual and related hospital policies and procedures reflect current regulatory guidelines, requirements, current evidence based best practices are consistently implemented throughout the organization.

The IP participates in the identification, surveillance, prevention and control of infections at Northeast Hospitals. The IP provides departmental consults and collaboration with hospital and community representatives on infection prevention & control issues. The IP serves as a resource to staff and physicians at NHC for matters related to infection prevention and control. The IP ensures integrity of infection prevention and control data elements, data collection, internal and external reports of infection prevention and control performance measures, and tracks progress toward goals. The IP participates in the Infection Prevention and Control Committee, serves on teams and groups as assigned. The IP develops, presents, and/or coordinates the presentation of relevant and current educational materials and programs.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in nursing or clinical healthcare major.

  • Completion of a basic education program in infection control, such as APIC.

  • Certified in Infection Control (CIC) required at time of hire or within one year of hire date.

  • Two to four years of relevant experience in a clinical health care environment.

  • Solid working knowledge of the principles of infectious disease, epidemiology, principles of infection control and surveillance, sterilization, sanitation and disinfection and statistical analysis required.

  • Knowledge of patient quality and safety performance measures and indicators, data definitions and sources and relevant national databases and benchmarks; knowledge of healthcare quality, safety and satisfaction data design, collection, aggregation and summarization; and expert knowledge of performance improvement models, methods and systems required.

  • Proficient in Windows-based operating software and systems that include MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access and MS PowerPoint.

  • Ability to work under minimal supervision, ability to adapt quickly to changes within the work environment required.

  • Experience in project development, project management and strong analytical skills, including data entry, manipulation, management, and data analysis required.

  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills required.

  • Must be a team player and have proven success applying a team approach and ability to work in conjunction with physicians, nurse managers, nurse directors, and staff in a supportive way to troubleshoot and resolve issues. Is able to address difficult situations with tact and diplomacy.

Certification/License: Certified in Infection Control (CIC) required at time of hire or within one year of hire date.
