About the Construction Project Manager Role

As the Construction Project Manager, you'll assist Market Area District Managers, Fleet Managers and Engineers in a variety of assignments during Collection & Post Collection facility projects construction stages, including evaluating facility improvements and prioritizing needs, developing improvement budgets and schedule(s), bidding, and project implementation. You'll monitor capital budgets to ensure project expenditures remain within the scope of work. You'll provide technical support and manage all aspects of capital construction projects. You'll oversee consultants, contractors and staff performing capital construction work. Prepares construction specifications, bid documents, contracts and change orders. You'll conduct field inspections to collect data, verify existing/actual conditions, and monitor conformance with plans/specifications. Reviewing site plans, design input, and assisting/leading third party design, permitting, and project implementation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To be successful in this role, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.

  • Studies specifications to plan procedures for construction on basis of starting and completion times and staffing requirements for each phase of construction.

  • Assembles members of organization (supervisory, clerical, engineering, and other workers) at start of project.

  • Orders procurement of tools and materials to be delivered at specified times to conform to work schedules.

  • Confers with and directs supervisory personnel and subcontractors engaged in planning and executing work procedures, interpreting specifications, and coordinating various phases of construction to prevent delays.

  • Confers with supervisory personnel and labor representatives to resolve complaints and grievances within work force.

  • Confers with supervisory and engineering personnel and inspectors and suppliers of tools and materials to resolve construction problems and improve construction methods.

  • Inspects work in progress to ensure that workmanship conforms to specifications and the adherence to construction schedules.

  • Prepares or reviews reports on progress, materials used and costs, and adjusts work schedules as indicated by reports.

  • Directs workers concerned with major maintenance or reconditioning projects for existing installations.

What does it take to be a Construction Project Manager?

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

Education and Experience

  • Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. (accredited)

  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management or related field

  • Experience: Four years of relevant work experience (in addition to education requirement).

  • Preferred: 5 years of direct construction project management.
