Hobart and William Smith Colleges Visiting Assistant Professor in Music - Musicology in Geneva, New York

The Department of Music at Hobart and William Smith invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor to begin August 1, 2024. This is a full-time, temporary, one-year position with a four-course teaching load (for musicology) or five-course teaching load (for musicology and choral conducting) for the academic year.

We seek a music scholar with a terminal degree (preferred) or ABD status in musicology or ethnomusicology, whose passion for teaching music as a liberal art is evidenced by, for example, expertise in US and global popular music, interdisciplinary connections to other departments and programs, music and social justice studies, and/or music studies for the non-musician. The successful candidate will teach two history/musicology courses (preferably one western and one non-western), one course on writing about popular music, and one elective that draws from or complements our current catalog of offerings. Topics may include film music, jazz history, genealogy of hip hop, US popular music, and/or women and music.

We particularly welcome candidates with choral or vocal studies expertise who can conduct the HWS Chorale; in such cases, the teaching load would combine courses and ensemble direction as indicated above.

Please submit via Interfolio a cover letter, CV, a statement describing how you create an inclusive classroom, a short sample video of your teaching (no longer than 15 minutes), and names of three references who are prepared to send letters on request. We will request further materials as needed. Review of applications will begin April 17th and continue until the position is filled.

The salary range for this position is $36,829-$52,915. Final salary will reflect both the number of courses to be taught and the degree status of the selected candidate.
