Annual Salary Range: $166,473 - $110,982

Job Summary

GKN Aerospace is seeking a dedicated Process Development Engineer to lead development of glass transparencies manufacturing and testing for aircraft and spacecraft applications.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conceive tooling, establish forming methods, devise toughening schedules (ion exchange and thermal), and interrogate optical quality of multilayer structural windows.

  • Develop, issue and maintain process specifications and work instructions.

  • Determine the process assurance activities conforming to appropriate regulations, industry standards and customer/internal governance.

  • Define, monitor and measure the effectiveness & efficiency of processes.

  • Train and support operations and design teams.

  • Solve processing problems and work with all stakeholders to prevent their recurrence.

  • Manage changes in glass related processes and develop improvement plans for current and future programs.

  • Collect objective evidence of conformity and work with GKN Site and Divisional Quality personnel in support of internal and external audits.

  • Travel approximately 5% as required, including some international.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry, or similar field of study.

  • Five (5) years of experience developing and manufacturing (forming and strengthening) glass windows or transparencies for transportation vehicles (aircraft, spacecraft, automotive or trains), using knowledge of heat transfer, plastic deformation, and stress-optical metrology. Will also accept Two (2) years of demonstrated graduate level knowledge in glass mechanics, ion exchange/ thermal toughing of glass and eagerness to develop into the role under direct guidance of current subject matter experts, in lieu of 5 years of manufacturing industry experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to create, execute, and report project work plans.

  • U.S. Person per ITAR regulations to comply with export compliance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of fracture mechanics and stress induced corrosion of inorganic glasses is desirable.

  • Working knowledge of glass chemistry and physics.

  • Knowledge of the manipulation of glass through forming, strengthening, and heat treatment.

  • Familiarity with manufacturing standards, statistical process control techniques, test equipment, gauging and instrumentation.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

  • Elementary CAD skills
