Job Description:

Underdirectsupervisionof a Respiratory Care Practitioner,theclinicalRespiratoryCare studentwill applytheir classroomknowledgein a health caresettingtoprovidecompetentbasicand specialtyrespiratorycareutilizing and interdisciplinary approachand individualizing caretomeetuniquepatientneeds.This position is accountable and responsible for respiratory care administered under the direction of a Licensed Respiratory Therapistand in accordance with therapy guidelines, applicable regulations, and departmental policy, procedures, and practices, ensuring the department’s patient, visitor and customer interactions are aligned with UTMB best practice guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications:

Enrolled in an accredited academic Respiratory Care program and have completed minimal one semester clinical practicum, apply discipline specific knowledge and skills, ability to understand written instructions and perform basic mathematical calculations; demonstrates skills for assigned specialty area/function or assigned procedures.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Under supervisionofRespiratoryTherapist,theRespiratoryStudentwillbeableto:

  • Assesstherespiratorycareneedsofpatients in general care / Med Surg patient / non-critical care.

  • Identifypotentialand actualdiagnosis/patientcareneedsand identifiesthecontraindications andpossiblecomplicationsofpatientsreceiving respiratorycare.

  • Initiate,evaluate,andreviewrespiratorycareplansthatreflectamultidisciplinaryapproachto appropriatepreventiveaction.

  • Setup andmaintain respiratoryequipment.

  • Maintainoxygen,humidity,and aerosoltherapyequipmentinventoryand supplies.

  • Performbloodgasanalysisand respiratoryfunctiontests.

  • Participateinpatientrounds.

  • Maintainpatientrecords.

  • Providepatient/familyrespiratorycareinstruction.

  • Adheretointernalcontrolsand reporting structure.

  • Other duties as assigned by preceptor or Supervising Respiratory Therapist

  • BLS Certification required.

  • Licensed as Respiratory Care Practitioner by the Texas Medical Board (TMB-RCP) within six months of graduation.
