GENERAL DESCRIPTION Career Path Promotion Opportunity: The Psychologist I is in a TJJD career path. The selected applicant may be promoted to Psychologist II upon completion of two years of experience as a licensed psychologist without having to compete for a vacant position provided he/she meets the established performance criteria per agency policy (PRS.15.07). TJJD effectively addresses the multiple and complex needs of the youth committed to the agency and their families through a trauma infor ed multi-disciplinary integrated approach that includes implementation of the agency approved Texas Model of Trauma Informed Corrections strategy and a Mental Health Treatment Program (MHTP). The MHTP provides enhanced psychiatric and psychological assistance to youth diagnosed with moderate to severe mental health problems and/or illnesses, which allows the general rehabilitation case managers to focus on risk reduction and protective factor enhancement strategies to reduce the risk of reoffending. This collaboration allows for holistic and individualized treatment of youth in need of MHTP services. Performs psychological work and assists in leading a team of mental health specialists at the assigned secure correctional facility. Work involves assisting in the supervision of trauma informed intake, assessment, and treatment processes; providing consultation and assisting with monitoring, evaluating and training for all assessment and treatment programs; providing consultation and training in conducting trauma informed groups based upon the Texas Model of Trauma Informed Corrections program; providing direct professional services including trauma informed groups, family, and individual counseling; conducting trauma informed psychological evaluations of youth; and performing discharge and transition activities to ensure coordination of treatment service delivery upon release to a halfway house or the community. Serves as a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) member and collaborates with case managers, education staff, youth development coaches, and parole officers. May be required to work in excess of 40 hours per workweek, different shift patterns, be on call and travel occasionally. Levels of Work Performed by Career Path Level: Psychologist I: Performs complex (journey-level) work under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Psychologist II: Performs advanced and/or managerial (senior-level) work under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provides clinical supervisory activities, including group monitoring as directed by the Senior Psychologist for Forensic Services. Conducts trauma informed psychological evaluations, suicide risk assessments and suicide monitoring; updates (MH/MI/Med), Administrative, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) evaluation, Behavior Management Plans, and other clinical evaluations that incorporate specific recommendations regarding transition planning, risk management, and appropriate core and behavioral interventions. Identifies when youth should be placed on or removed from suicide alert; and identifies supervision requirements needed to ensure youth safety. Provides a range of direct trauma informed therapeutic services, including individual, group, psychoeducational, and MDT interviews of youth. Provides specialized consultation to MDT members, including juvenile correctional officers, case managers, and education staff on trauma informed assessments, treatment, adaptations and modifications, intervention, Behavior Management Plans, clinical and behavioral management of youth who are referred with special needs or problems, and group monitoring. Contributes to the development, maintenance, and delivery of in-service training designed to improve the clinical performance of facility staff (e.g., Stage Assessment, suicide prevention training, and other specialized training). Documents direct services provided. Monitors outcomes for racial, ethnic, and/or gender disparities and takes action to address identified disparities.
