Job Description:

A postdoctoral researcher position studying artificial intelligence in brain dynamics is available in the laboratory of Dr. Ruogu Fang (https://www.bme.ufl.edu/labs/fang/ruogu/index.html). This position is for an initial one-year appointment, and has the potential to be renewed for an additional year based on performance and funding availability.

We are seeking a highly self-motivated and qualified machine learning and medical image analysis researcher to join the Smart Medical Informatics Learning and Evaluation (SMILE) Lab led by Dr. Ruogu Fang (https://www.bme.ufl.edu/labs/fang/ruogu/index.html) at the University of Florida as a postdoctoral associate. Our group focuses on artificial intelligence (AI)-empowered brain health and neuroscience-inspired AI, by developing innovative and precision diagnosis and intervention tools using advanced machine learning techniques.

Your role will be to lead, develop, and publish impactful research applying machine learning methods for multimodal medical data analysis to improve the brain health. Medical data will come from a variety of resources including multimodal neuroimaging, retinal images, electronic health records, genomics. Our research spans a wide range of domains and clinical applications, including prevention, diagnosis, intervention, and prediction of neurodegenerative diseases, and more. The successful candidate will make effective contributions towards ongoing research projects, and will lead, design, and implement new brain health relevant projects.

Attributes of UF and Gainesville: The BME Department is housed in a state-of-the art building that is located in the medical school and steps from engineering. The University of Florida is one of only a few comprehensive universities, having medical, veterinary, dental, nursing, public health, and engineering disciplines all co-localized on the same, contiguous campus. UF is a highly collaborative environment that provides researchers with many opportunities for learning (e.g., top seminar programs, excellent core research facilities) and research collaborations. Gainesville is located in the northern region of Florida, within 1-1.5 hours of each coast, and just 1.5-2 hours to Orlando and Tampa. It is a small to medium-sized city with a low cost of living, excellent public and private schools, and southern hospitality.

The J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering is one of only a few departments in the nation to be co-localized with a top-ranked medical school, veterinary school and dental school. The department is housed in a new state-of-the-art building (completed in 2010) that is co-located with the medical school and steps from engineering. Biomedical Engineering at UF partners with many local research centers and institutes including the McKnight Brain Institute, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center.

Expected Salary:

Minimum salary $47,500. Salary is negotiable, commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

• Ph.D. degree in computer science, electrical and computer engineering, biomedical engineering, applied mathematics, statistics, neuroscience, or related fields

• Significant experience in machine learning, deep learning, image processing, computer vision, and/or data science

• Proficient in Python

• Track record of innovative research and successful publications

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Ability to work both independently and in a team

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with Python, Pytorch/Tensorflow, MATLAB, FSL/FreeSurfer/SPM is desirable.
