Job Description:

Reporting to the Director, R&D for Lab Specimen Management, the R&D Senior Manager will be responsible for building and managing a world class organization accountable for Sustaining Engineering to meet the business objectives of the Lab Specimen Management Platform Team within the Specimen Management Business Unit. The team will consist of an engineering staff of approximately 5 to 8+ individuals based in Franklin Lakes and/or BDTCI (India) and be responsible for multiple projects of varying size/scope.

The R&D Senior Manager in this role is responsible for ensuring technical excellence, for driving/making R&D decisions on product and process changes, effectively selecting, developing, organizing, and motivating their staff, and developing/building/maintaining multi-functional relationships.

The primary responsibilities for this position are:

  • Contribute, lead, and provide guidance on critical sustaining engineering initiatives on behalf of R&D as required to support the needs of the Lab Specimen Management Business Platform Team.

  • Effectively develop, organize, and motivate a staff of approximately 5 to 8+ skilled associates globally.

  • Optimize resource utilization, continuously explore ways to improve throughput effectiveness and efficiency of the teams.

  • Demonstrate strong and clear accountability for the group’s development, performance, and results.

  • Effectively recruit and select staff members when openings arise.

  • Accountable for improving and further developing processes and best practices.

  • Accountable for the successful execution of key initiatives within the portfolio and ensure regular updates are provided to the leadership as appropriate.

  • Align dedicated resources multi-functionally to optimize and ensure execution success.

  • Ensure product development process are followed through appropriate execution and technical rigor.

  • Ensure adequate support to Customers, Sales, WW manufacturing, and OEM.

  • Support development & maintenance of detailed budgets in accordance with project, department, and business objectives.

  • Ensure efficient and effective transition of sustaining engineering initiatives to high volume manufacturing in locations throughout the world.

  • Accountable for multiple initiatives/projects of various sizes.

  • Identify, assess, and develop innovative organizational capability in:

  • Technology development, product development, continuous improvement, remediation, and change control.

  • Project leadership, execution, and communication.

  • Productivity metrics to constantly measure performance.

  • Critical parameter management.

  • Test method development, product verification and validation.

  • Improving throughput, effectiveness, and efficiency.

  • Accountable for leading and organizing functional reviews as required.

  • Active engagement in detailed review of cross-functional plans and be accountable for their success.

  • Perform periodic reviews of progress against plans. Ensure plans are completed appropriately within department. Be accountable for timely delivery of all development deliverables as specified.

  • Develop and apply innovative approaches to ensure the best outcomes in all aspects of the role creating an environment in which innovation can flourish through empowerment, encouragement, and support.

  • Ensure compliance with BD and applicable local, state, and federal quality policies, procedures, practices, and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering subject area.

  • B.S.: 10+ years of experience in technical area

  • M.S.: 7+ years of experience in technical area

  • Ph.D.: 5+ years of experience in technical area

  • Strong technical judgment and extensive technical leadership skills.

  • Demonstrated capability of leading R&D Sustaining Engineering Initiatives/Projects.

  • Experience in guiding team/individuals to develop technical solutions to complex problems.

  • Sound knowledge of engineering first principles.

  • R&D functional planning, requirement generation and technical (DFSS/Design/Cross functional) reviews for all product development phases.

  • Strong project management, prioritizing and multi-tasking skills to work within tight deadlines.

  • Solid modeling experience (Pro/E, SolidWorks or equivalent).

  • Ability to effectively and clearly communicate concepts, ideas and knowledge to other individuals and teams.

  • Experience in directing associates and leading small cross-functional teams.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Project and Visio.

  • Disciplined product development processes & project planning.

  • Knowledge of Six Sigma (DMAIC) practices, and Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodologies.

  • Product development considerations for tightly controlled high-volume manufacturing process.

  • Strong creative, analytical and problem-solving skills required.

  • Develop, build and maintain strong cross functional relationships.

  • Good written & verbal communication skills.
