Total Security Solutions Design Engineer in Fowlerville, Michigan

Summary:

The Design Engineer will collaborate with sales, project managers, production, and the customer to design and engineer system drawings and plans for custom bullet resistant barriers, bulletproof glass components, and accessories.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design and engineer drawings and plans for custom bullet resistant barrier systems and accessories based on individual customer security needs in either a space that is a retrofit installation or new construction

  • Interpret customer needs and create a barrier design that offers optimal security, functionality, and aesthetic appeal

  • Take direction from, and work with, the client throughout the entire process from beginning design and planning stages through production and installation.

  • Solve complex challenges to custom projects, being resourceful, and designing solutions to tough engineering obstacles

  • Design and engineer all integral raw products such as acrylic, polycarbonate, aluminum, steel, fiberglass, laminate and wood to integrate into custom bullet resistant barrier systems

  • Work extensively with AutoCAD and occasionally Solidworks for design and manufacturing

  • Interpret architect’s drawings and specifications for integration into design and manufacturing of product

  • Coordinate ordering of product for use in systems

  • Ensure proper installation of products at client sites by creating custom install and maintenance instructions for the end user

  • Occasionally, perform field measurements at new and existing facilities

  • Periodically participate in shop fabrication and site installation

Success Factors:

  • Ability to manage multiple projects of varying complexity requiring excellent project management skills 

  • Communicate clearly and concisely with internal and external customers at all levels of the organization, using verbal and written distribution channels

  • Optimizes organizational effectiveness and prioritizes workload, even with multiple interruptions

  • Adjusts promptly and calmly to change, works well as part of a team, and remains calm under pressure.  Maintains a collaborative work ethic and commitment to excellence in dealing with internal and external customers

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS in relevant engineering or engineering technology fields such as Architectural, Construction, or Mechanical

  • AutoCAD skills required, Solidworks Preferred

  • Must be well organized and exhibit a high degree of attention to detail

  • Energized by a fast paced work environment 

  • Must be goal oriented and focused on continuous improvement

  • Ability to anticipate and value customer needs, troubleshoot, and offer proactive solutions to any potential issues

  • Ability to travel as needed (up to 25%) to assist with project measurement and installation.

Preferred Work Experience:

  • 3+ years design and project engineering experience 

  • Experience in furniture, cabinetry, and millwork design

  • Additional hands-on production/assembly experience

  • Experience with door hardware, furniture design

  • Experience with acrylic, glazing, curtain wall systems, and carpentry is a plus

Physical Requirements:

  • Communicate with others and exchange accurate information.

  • Operate a computer and other office machinery or equipment.

  • Ability to move about inside the office to access file cabinets or office machinery.

  • Have a collaborative mindset, must work well with a team

  • Ability to work remotely if asked, with high speed internet access

Work Environment:

  • This job takes place in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment.  Office employees are required to wear safety glasses, safety shoes, and a highly visible vest at all times in production areas and labs
