ProMedica Health System Nurse Manager - Med/Surg - Full Time - Days in Fostoria, Ohio

Provides leadership and is responsible for managing the daily operations for patient care area(s). Promotes, integrates, and sustains the Professional Practice Model (PPM) in all aspects of nursing care. Coordinates high quality patient care. Provides staff support through facilitation, coaching, and role modeling leadership behaviors that enhance quality patient care, excellent customer service, and fosters employee development.

Collaborates with other leadership team members. Plans, supervises, implements, and monitors structures, processes, guidelines and policies and procedures of patient care. Represents patient care in the organization and in the community. Integrates safety techniques, hospital quality, medical quality, and continuous performance improvement initiatives at the point of direct patient care. Provides leadership to assist departmental leadership teams in managing unit(s)/divisional operations, regulatory compliance, and evidence-based practices. Participates in strategic planning for patient care services. Promotes and models high quality, ethical, culturally appropriate patient care through evidence-based care that focuses on patient safety, excellent customer service, sound fiscal responsibility, and creation of a healthy work environment.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

All duties listed below are essential unless noted otherwise

  1. Collaborate with the Director, department personnel, medical staff, and various administrative staff in planning for and proving quality and consistent patient care/services.

  2. Facilitates and responsible for unit organization and management within established policies and procedures, budgetary and productivity targets, and long-range/short-term objectives that support strategic plan.

  3. Facilitates annual review, including but not limited to performance evaluations and unit specific competencies.

  4. Interviews applicants and selects quality personnel who share similar values and philosophy as ProMedica and the unit.

  5. Coordinates and monitors department’s orientation with the patient care supervisor and Workforce Development for all newly appointed employees to ensure a clear understanding of position responsibilities, departmental/unit policies/procedures protocols, standards of care and procedures, fire and safety regulations and other department-specific requirements.

  6. Coordinate and report unit specific continuous quality improvement processes that complement and support the hospital quality initiatives.

  7. Supervises, manages, coaches and guides employees to achieve performance expectations of their positions. Manages disciplinary process.

  8. Responsible for creation of and maintenance of policy, procedure and guideline development as requested.

  9. Models and fosters positive employee relations. Creates department culture in which teamwork is encouraged and fostered, healthy relationships are valued and there is no tolerance for offensive behaviors.

  10. Promotes positive customer relations with patients, families, and physicians. Initiates service recovery as appropriate.

  11. Requires effective interpersonal skills while maintaining a professional manner. Must promote positivity and engagement.

  12. Responsible for creation of operating budget of department and capital budget for department. (Adult Division)

  13. Participates and manages the unit’s safety event reporting tool. Appropriately investigates and follows up on safety reports generates and promotes the utilization of the tool amongst the staff.

  14. Participates in the self-appraisal of the unit/departmental effectiveness by driving and leading the execution of the department goals and plans for improvement.

  15. Actively maintains and creates appropriate staff communications that are current, relevant, and focused. Utilizes the appropriate methods of communication as assigned by leadership. May create and use other methods as approved.

  16. Responsible for unit payroll activities.

  17. Responsible for appropriately creating and maintaining unit staff schedules utilizing appropriate tools as directed.

  18. Participates and manages professional development of self and staff through the creation of unit activities, communications, and coaching.

  19. Participates and conducts leadership rounds including staff and patients/visitors routinely. Identifies and collaborates with the patient care team in resolving issues and concerns in a timely manner. Provides follow up through closed loop communications.

  20. Actively supports and leads in shared governance activities.

  21. Requires, demonstrates, and models, coaches appropriately on the required error prevention techniques including but not limited to STAR, ARCC and escalation.

  22. Responsible for 24/7 Accountability.

  23. Other duties as assigned. Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) or master’s degree in Nursing (MSN) (if bachelor’s degree is non-nursing) required upon hire. Must be able to successfully complete the hospital/unit professional nurse orientation (PNO). Responsible for maintenance of competency and licensure requirements.

Skills: Problem solving, organizational skills, excellent communication, and interpersonal skills. Must be able to function independently and as an integral member of various teams. Must display a commitment to customer satisfaction.

Years of Experience: Must have a minimum of 2 years in nursing in a patient care area and progressive leadership experience.

License: Must be a Registered Nurse and licensed to practice in the State of Ohio. Certification: (Adult): BLS and ACLS certified or obtained upon hire; (Women’s) BLS, ACLS, and NRP certified or obtained upon hire; (ECH) BLS

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Master’s degree

Years of Experience: 3 years’ experience in patient care area.

Certification: Specialty certification encouraged

WORKING CONDITIONS

Personal Protective Equipment: Requires moderate physical effort and may be exposed to infectious diseases, blood, and other bodily fluids.

Physical Demands: Must be able to move about hospital and between workstations; and tolerate prolonged periods of standing. Must be able to tolerate exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals, temperature changes and exposure to blood borne pathogens and bodily fluid. Must be able to understand directions, communicate and respond to inquiries; requires effective interpersonal skills. Must be able to move, lift and carry light to heavy patients or equipment. Must be able to work in an office and/or patient care areas, may require extended hours and/or weekends to meet commitments and deadlines.
