Job Description

Director, Strategy and Operations, Device, Packaging, and Process (DPP)

The DPP function is a key component of Gilead’s Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing (PDM) organization, providing a portfolio of technologies for selection and implementation by product teams. These technologies enable product teams to develop and execute a strategy to differentiate our products and ensure Gilead is highly competitive in commercial markets. The Director of Strategy and Operations will support the Vice President of DPP as an internal consultant to drive collaboration, cross-functional clarity, and alignment on projects, initiatives, and departmental operations. The leader will serve as a manager of Project Management resources and capabilities. The leader will also influence and help drive the DPP strategies and investment decisions to meet the needs of the company product portfolio across company functions in (PDM, Research, Clinical and Commercial). The leader is expected to facilitate strategies required to evolve the organization to enhance the technical and development capabilities. Finally, the leader collaborates and drives alignment with counterparts in Gilead’s global strategy and operations network, The leader must foster an environment of cross-functional collaboration, accountability, and business rigor. The leader must influence across functions to facilitate the overall enhancement of organization capabilities device/combination product development in Technical Development. This responsibility includes ensuring effective interfaces with Marketing, Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Clinical Development and counterpart technical groups.

S pecific Job Responsibilities:

  • Gather, analyze, and synthesize information on topics as requested by the vice president and/or leadership team.

  • Lead project management resources for the department ensuring best practices, implementation, process improvement initiatives and governance.

  • Prepare strategic communications utilizing a clear understanding of the business strategy and issues; develop and maintain consistent, relevant content for use in executive level communications and to support/lead projects to further organizational and business goals.

  • Lead special projects as assigned by the vice president.

  • Assist vice president in developing content for presentations and other communications.

  • Routinely manages confidential information appropriately and ensures vice president is appropriately prepared for key events.

  • Prepare technical and strategy presentation materials for delivery to executives; assist with budget preparations and tracking of department spending and variances.

  • Develop and support the implementation of vice president’s communications processes, standards, and best practices within the DPP department.

  • Digest and summarize a variety of pre-read documents and technical reports for the vice president; attend meetings on behalf of and representing the vice president.

  • Identify opportunities to define and implement solutions that improve the effectiveness of the DPP Leadership Team

  • Manage schedule and agenda content for DPP Leadership Team and All Hands meetings; prepare agendas, track action plans, distribute minutes.

  • Aid vice president to synthesize and communicate department goals and objectives.

  • Prepare technical and strategy presentation materials for delivery to executives; assist with budget preparations and tracking of department spending and variances.

  • Help GDPD leaders by working with them to validate and codify existing strategies, develop strategic operating principles, and formulate new network strategies depending on the business and organizational needs.

  • Execute external benchmarking by leveraging external consultants, attending best in practice conferences, and connecting with peers. Manage and build into a digestible form the resulting benchmark data and apply to ongoing strategic analyses.

  • Support the DPP LT, and each of their teams, in critical decision making.

REQUIREMENTS:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 12+ years of relevant experience, or master’s degree / PhD / MD with 10+ years of relevant experience.

  • Strong business acumen.

  • Strategic and operational management skills required with the ability to develop and present sound proposals and recommendations; lead discussions on how to determine and prioritize strategic priorities; responsible for creation and tracking of analytics.

  • Proven experience in stakeholder management and ability to effectively collaborate across the organizations; interacts within and across the matrix to manage deliverables and timelines across the organization; manage department contribution to operating reviews.

  • Demonstrated capability to deliver strategic analysis and optionality with an impact on the effectiveness of a global manufacturing and development organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team of multi-disciplinary professionals in delivering strategy analysis and recommending options.

  • Capability for problem solving and strategic, and critical thinking that results in significant business value.

  • Ability to represent the organization at internal meetings and act as an interface between the organization and other groups at Gilead.

  • Experience working across different cultures.

Preferred Experience / Skills:

  • Experience in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry with demonstrated cross-functional collaboration and leadership; deep knowledge about the biotech / bio-pharma segment.

  • Ability to multi-task and independently lead multiple projects and meet key deadlines.

  • High EQ, ability to listen, and adapt to the dynamic of a situation.

  • Confidence to provide dissenting views, when appropriate.

  • Ability to work cross-functionally and understand the motivations of colleagues in other functions.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to lead, interact with, focus, negotiate, resolve conflict and drive consensus among individuals from a variety of cultures and disciplines.

  • Highly adept at influencing upward and downward without direct reporting relationships.

  • Drives forward in face of ambiguity.

  • Bias for action; ability to prioritize.

  • Strong leadership, self-direction, comfort and experience tackling ambiguous, complex problems.

  • Proven ability to lead collaborative and creative strategic problem solving by breaking down issues, identifying options to address, synthesizing insights, and driving to action and resolution.

  • Deep experience in designing and deploying rigorous processes, tools, templates and governance.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to synthesize complex situations, illustrate conceptual paths, and facilitate discussions leading to resolution on key issues.

The salary range for this position is: $205,700.00 - $266,200.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
