Job Summary

Safely and reliably transports and assists students and other school district passengers to and from school, educational or sporting events, community-based programs and other special activities.

Essential Functions

  • Completes, prior to each trip/route, the required pre-trip/route inspection. (e.g., keeps the windows, mirrors and all lights clean of dirt, ice, and snow).

  • Checks regularly to keep the vehicle full of oil, gas and anti-freeze for its scheduled assignment.

  • Operates the bus and related vehicle equipment in a safe, efficient, and legal manner, including radio communications and traffic laws.

  • Checks to see all students are remained seated while in route.

  • Completes the assigned route/trip on a safe, but timely basis.

  • Maintains and enforces all provisions of the District's Bus-Safety Rules for riders.

  • Operates wheel chair lift when needed.

  • Complete securement of wheel chairs, car seats, seat belts, and other types of safety equipment.

  • May assist disabled students with special needs loading and unloading.

  • Completes the post-trip/route walk through requirements. (e.g., checks for sleeping children, book bags, instruments or damage to the vehicle).

  • Confronts emergency situations in accordance with safety-standard operational procedures.

  • When necessary, provides assistance to students who need help in cleaning up body fluids.

  • Meets contract obligations regarding attendance and punctuality.

  • Establishes and maintains effective communication with the riders.

  • Guide and instruct students on posted School Bus Rules and discipline according to District guidelines.

  • Report to Transportation Director all route changes, route hazards, dangerous bus stops.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Class B (CDL), with passenger, air-brake endorsement and the Iowa School Bus Operator's Permit.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Possess the physical and mental capability for assigned responsibilities.

  • Possess no personal or moral habits which would be detrimental to the safety and welfare of transported students.

  • Know, understand and obey all Federal, State and local rules and regulations governing bus drivers and the operation of a school bus.

  • Possess a motor vehicle record that is acceptable to the District's insurance carrier.

  • Demonstrated aptitude and ability to fulfill assigned responsibilities.

  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.?
