Description of Work Unit

At the Colorado State University ( CSU ) Veterinary Teaching Hospital ( VTH ), we exist to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exception veterinary care and service to the community…every day. Supporting our Mission, Vision and Values.

The Equine and Livestock units are an integral part of the CSU VTH which provides both elective and 24-hour emergency/intensive care to horses and livestock at a tertiary level teaching hospital. Simultaneously, we provide clinical instruction to professional veterinary medical students, interns, residents, veterinary technicians, graduate veterinarians and others with an emphasis on practical applications of routine husbandry, internal medicine, lameness, surgery, anesthesia, emergency procedures, dentistry, endoscopy, intensive care management and neonatal critical care management.

Position Summary

The Hospital Manager for Equine and Livestock is an integral part of elevating large animal clinical care to the highest level through retention, recruitment and supervision of highly skilled, caring technicians. The Hospital Manager also has a key role in maintaining excellent client relationships and building on the quality of large animal care that CSU is known for by working closely with the Medical Director to achieve these goals in a fiscally responsible manner.

Successful candidate should have flexibility with their schedule to meet the needs of 24/7 operations.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

A combination of signing bonus and/or relocation expenses may be considered for successful candidates.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

  • Three (3) years of experience working in the veterinary field.

  • Three (3) years of management and/or leadership experience.

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Outstanding communication skills and the ability to engage employees at all levels of the organization.

  • Experience in budget management, strategic planning, and policy development.

  • Experience in technician recruitment, leadership, and retention through creating a cohesive hospital environment and providing a structure where employees can advance.

  • Experience in an academic/higher education environment.

  • Certified Veterinary Practice Manager ( CVPM )

  • Prior experience working as a veterinary assistant or Registered Veterinary Technician is valuable experience.

  • Understanding the educational and clinical goals of a teaching hospital.

  • Outstanding client communication and experience with conflict resolution.

Duty/Responsibility

  • This position supervises for equine and livestock technical staff including staff working within the Johnson Family Equine Hospital ( JFEH ), Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Service, Equine Field Service, Equine Reproduction Lab ( ERL ), and Livestock hospital, and works to allocate personnel resources based on caseload and daily operational needs of the services.

  • Lead and manage search processes for certain new hires. Establish a consistent training and onboarding process for new employees and delegate elements of training across existing employees and appropriate shifts.

  • Recommends promotion and updates position descriptions relating to changing responsibilities for existing positions.

  • This position will be in communication with service technician supervisors throughout the day to assess needs of patients, clinicians and staff and adapt schedule changes due to emergencies, additional appointments through communication with the equine front desk staff. Staffing and facilities adjustments may also need to be made if biosecurity concerns arise and this would be communicated by the biosecurity committee.

  • This position will work closely with the Equine Medical Director and VHS Clinical Services Managing Director to fulfill our mission of equine and livestock service excellence to the patient, client and referring veterinarian triad as well as provide an outstanding working environment for our technical staff through exceptional safety standards, accountability, and advancement.

  • Maintain excellent communications with the medical director, faculty, house officers, staff, and students as well as VTH partners to stay apprised of possible issues, concerns, and feedback related to the equine services. This will be accomplished by regular communications with all units including partners in the VTH .

  • This position should seek continuing education (CE) to continue to further their education and encourage employees to participate in CE regularly.

Duty/Responsibility

  • This position has a key role in instilling a culture of customer service excellence throughout all aspects of equine and livestock from the moment the client calls or emails to the end of their appointment or contact with large animal services.

  • Manage the consistent messaging to the client that their animal’s care is our number one priority.

  • Works with internal partners to provide timely solutions for client service issues and works with the Medical Director and Service Leaders to ensure improved team success related to difficult client situations.

  • This position will support technical staff and services with difficult client communications by involving key partners such as Medical Director, Argus, Client Service Excellence team.

  • Support outreach functions to client and referring veterinarians (rDVMs).

  • Provide input on regular cost analysis of existing and new procedure costs and client pricing.

  • Aid in providing justification for new equipment purchases, additional staffing, promotion of existing staff, and offer ideas on resources to support optimal operations of all Equine and Livestock Services.

  • Active member of budget meetings, audits, capital equipment purchases in conjunction with the Medical Director and Equine Service Leaders.

  • Engage with staff responsible for supply management and ordering to ensure all operational and budgetary goals are met.

  • Participate in marketing of Equine and Livestock Services to help build and maintain caseload. This will be accomplished in conjunction with the Veterinary Health System ( VHS ) marketing team. Be an ambassador for all Equine and Livestock Services when out in public.
