Amentum Aircraft Sheetmetal Mechanic 1 in Fort Bragg, North Carolina

The Aircraft Sheetmetal Mechanic I , maintenance fabricates, installs and maintains in good repair the sheet-metal equipment and fixtures (such as machine guards, grease pans, shelves, lockers, tanks, ventilators, chutes, ducts, metal roofing) of an establishment. Work involves most of the following: planning and laying out all types of sheet-metal maintenance work from blueprints, models, or other specifications, setting up and operating all available types of sheet-metal working machines, using a variety of hand tools in cutting, bending, forming, shaping, fitting and assembling, and installing sheet-metal articles as required.

  • Read and analyzes work request and applicable specifications or similar work data.

  • Develop and draw working sketches showing view, section, or profile.

  • Manufactures and fabricates aircraft sheet metal parts, panels, doors, etc., from various serviced aircraft. Such aircraft articles have numerous combined straight and curved edges or irregular curves and planes such as fuselage, door assemblies, windshield panel angles, washers, firewalls and straight brackets. Such sheet metal stock/parts/items consist of various types of metal, e.g., steel stainless steel, aluminum, corrugated aluminum, titanium, iron, brass, copper, magnesium, rubber, plastic, plexiglass, fiberglass, etc. Determines type and extent of repair or replacement required, type of material and repair methods to use. Lays out, cuts forms, joins, assembles and installs items.

  • Develops parts and templates from prints, drawings, or original parts to produce repair parts that are not readily available. To accomplish the development of these parts or templates plans, lay outs, cuts, forms, shapes and assembles complex sheet metal items.

  • Also, may use developed patterns/layouts, prefabricated templates or old part as a sample, scribes outline on sheet metal and cuts out scribed part using shears, Do-All saw and turret punch.

  • Forms metal using cornice brake, punch press, drill press, and similar metal forming tools.

  • Finish and smooth edges of metal sheet after cutting and assembles component sheet metal piece with rivets, screws, nuts and bolts. Aligns, drills and reams material for installation of various types of riveting and taking precautions to protect dissimilar metals.

  • Applies necessary protective compounds, special insulating protective tape, plastic cement, fiberglass resins, etc.

  • Independently lays out template, transcribes information from template and manufactures double contour parts with configuration in several planes.

  • Assembles and fastens fabricated parts by installing bolts, rivets, screws and/or seaming.

  • Ensures finished aircraft parts meet quality standards for soundness, strength, appearance in accordance with specification and/or similar requirements.

  • Employee may be required to work inside fuel tanks (e.g., CH 47) or other confined spaces.

  • Follows all safety procedures and for using appropriate personal protective equipment to include checking protective devices for proper operation and maintains a safe clean work environment.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Valid up-to-date A&P license.

  • If no A&P license, shall have three (3) years aviation maintenance experience, two (2) years rotary wing aircraft experience, and two (2) years on the assigned MDS ( Sh eetmetal ).

  • All experience must be within the six (6) most recent years.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for a facility credentials/authorization at the work location.

  • Tools are Required ; Must possess own shadowed/etched tools & toolbox.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two (2) or more year’s actual and recent experience in the repair, modification, maintenance, and overhaul of aircraft.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, repair procedures and replacement of parts.

  • Broad knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modifications and repair.

  • Basic knowledge of electrical theory and a thorough knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers.

  • Working knowledge of technical publications and Logistics Information Systems.

  • Able to prioritize workloads to maintain schedules on assigned projects and may be required to lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks.

  • Participate in maintenance test flights and operation checks as required.

  • Possess the level of experience to inspect all required aeronautical type maintenance to be performed by Mechanics.

  • The incumbent receives technical guidance, as required, from supervisor or higher-level technician, will occasionally be required to lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks, and may be required to make entries in aircraft logs and records.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment

  • Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods throughout the day.

  • Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.

  • Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders.

  • May be required to lift heavy objects whose weight may exceed 50 pounds.

  • Must be able to type using a standard keyboard to communicate through e-mail and various software applications.

  • Will handle dirty parts and lubricants.

  • Will be required to wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Must be able to pass a Respirator Physical and Fit Test qualification.

  • May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, forklift, etc.

  • Must be able to lift/push/pull minimum of 50 pounds.

  • May work in maintenance shop or outside.

  • Must be able to work in a shop where the environment is drafty, noisy, and dirty.

  • May be exposed to extreme noise from operating equipment.

  • May be exposed to electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts or vehicles.

  • May be expected to work in austere environments and all-weather conditions.
