Company Overview

Hemphill Construction Co., Inc. was founded in 1963 and is a regional contractor with more than 350 employees located in Florence, MS.  Hemphill specializes in site grading for large commercial developments, complete subdivision developments, structural concrete, steel sheet piling, water, and wastewater treatment plants and pump stations, and installation of all types of underground utilities including storm drainage, sanitary sewer, water mains, gas systems and the monitoring of storm debris removal and debris removal itself from storm-ravaged areas.

Job Summary

Local outdoor work in the Indianola, MS area removing and replacing water meters. Plumbing, pipe fitting, and wiring skills are desired. A professional demeanor is critical for all of our projects. 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Working outside in all types of weather conditions.

  • Load and unload meters and supplies daily from vehicles daily

  • Drive through the city or rural routes to designated areas.

  • Remove existing water meters

  • Install new water meters

  • Must analyze the job site to complete the task for a successful and safe install of a meter.

  • The work environment consists of utility locations of water, electric, and gas meters.

  • Respect customer property and abide by the company’s Code of Conduct

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of proper use of equipment, materials, and supplies used in heavy construction work.

  • Basic knowledge of applicable safety precautions.

  • Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule per foreman’s direction.

  • Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing as required.

  • Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.

  • Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.

Required Education, Training, and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) preferred.

  • Valid appropriate state driver’s license (general operator license). 

  • Willingness and ability to perform manual work following verbal and written instructions.

Work Environment:

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.

  • Must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue, and effectively jump, sprint, or throw an object.

  • Requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination.

  • Noise level is generally loud.

  • Must be able to quickly move arms and legs.

  • Excellent stamina is required.
