Job Announcement

This position uses their personal recovery experience and training to connect with individuals and offer peer recovery support, engagement, and education to those receiving Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) Treatment while incarcerated and receiving services through the medical branch and behavioral health services. Works with individuals recovering from substance use disorders who are incarcerated or in the process of reentering the community after a period of incarceration and involvement in jail-based recovery and treatment services. Assesses individual social, health, emotional, and economic needs of individuals and supports them to transition successfully to community-based recovery and treatment resources as well as services related to other identified needs. Engages and motivates individuals to continue active engagement in a recovery lifestyle. This may include individual and group support, transportation coordination, supporting recovery housing decisions, and helping individuals access needed services and natural supports such as self-help programs, wellness, and basic needs.

Note: This is a grant funded position and funding is evaluated each year.

Illustrative Duties

  • Interviews the client and family members to gather data on their social, health, emotional and economic problems;

  • Conducts comprehensive client assessments and prepares and implements service plans;

  • Works with clients to develop a plan of service to meet social, health, emotional and economic needs. With the clients, formulates objectives and identifies actions to resolve the clients' problems;

  • Conducts home visits to families for the purpose of monitoring, counseling and supervision;

  • Assists applicants and service recipients with identifying and utilizing available resources and refers clients to other public and private agencies and services;

  • Assesses and authorizes purchase of social services to qualifying clients that will help to meet their social, health, emotional and economic needs;

  • Recruits, develops, trains, and monitors individual service providers such as contract service providers and volunteers;

  • Uses automated technology and hard copy files to maintain and update case data, notes, documents, records, contacts and summaries of information.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current social service problems and methods/approaches to address issues;

  • Knowledge of regulations and guidelines relating to the assigned area of social service specialization;

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;

  • Ability to use automated technology to establish and maintain case records;

  • Ability to maintain professional ethics and confidentiality of client information;

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals;

  • Ability to schedule and manage workload sufficiently to meet deadlines.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree.

Contingent upon the area of assignment, some positions within this class may require specific certification(s) prior to employment and/or the ability to acquire necessary certification(s) within a specified time period following employment. The certifications are identified in the position description and employment advertisement.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Virginia Certified Peer Specialist or ability to become certified within one year of appointment.

  • Lived recovery experience

  • Knowledge of Medications for Opioid Use Disorder and community-based recovery supports.

  • 1-2 years of professional social work experience.

  • 1-2 years of experience working with people recovering from substance use disorders.

  • Ability to travel to various locations within and outside the county.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

Virginia Certified Peer Specialist credential or ability to obtain this credential within one year of appointment.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, child protective services registry check, credit check, driving record check, and polygraph exam, psychological exam, and tuberculosis test to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Job is generally sedentary in nature; however, visual acuity is required to read data on computer monitor, incumbent must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment. Must communicate with others. Employee may be required to lift up to 15 lbs. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
