Job Description:

Specific Requirements

The Industrial Hygienist is responsible for ensuring overseeing that all laboratory and ship operations are in compliance. Specific tasks to oversee are listed below:

  • Conduct daily surveys and inspections of all ship operations, laboratory operations and all ship areas to ensure safe practices are being followed, including appropriate use of PPE

  • Provide technical assistance/guidance to all scientists and crew members to ensure safe work practices are being adhered to at all times

  • Provide technical assistance/guidance to science staff and crewmembers to properly implement the Chemical Hygiene Plan (Safety, Health & Environmental Compliance Manual V 9.3; Appendix J)

  • Ensure all applicable health and safety rules aboard the R/V Lake Guardian are implemented and being adhered to properly

  • Ensure all scientists and crew members are in compliance with all deck and ship related safety procedures

  • Ensure all scientists and crew members are in compliance with all laboratory procedures, SOPs and the Safety, Health & Environmental Compliance Manual V 9.3

  • Review all final survey plans prior to embarking on the survey to track chemicals that will be brought onboard and/or used during the survey

  • Ensure all chemicals that will be in during each survey have a current SDS that is readily accessible to all scientists and crew members (CHO should refer to the SDS binder on the ship)

  • Monitor chemical handling and storage in the laboratories

  • Periodically monitor laboratory and deck operations during sampling events

  • Coordinate and implement emergency procedures related to hazardous chemicals in the laboratory area

  • Inspect and evaluate engineering controls to ensure effective hazard prevention

  • Inspect PPE to ensure good condition

  • Conduct potable water testing bi-monthly, while onboard.

  • Conduct safety meetings at the beginning of each survey to highlight potential hazards, chemicals that will be in use, and review emergency procedures

  • Conduct safety orientation and walk-thru of ship for all new scientists and/or crewmembers

  • Prepare weekly memos to client

  • Familiarity with water quality monitoring a plus

Schedule

The Industrial Hygienist will oversee staff onboard the RV Lake Guardian working 8-12 hours per day, 7 days per week during sampling activity typically between April 1-October 31. The Industrial Hygienist will need to be present for training on the ship at the beginning of the survey season in April. The Industrial Hygienist will also need to be available for consultation or other ship safety related tasks. The Industrial Hygienist can serve in an oversight role for additional staff who will sail onboard the RV Lake Guardian, and also has an opportunity to sail on the vessel themselves. The Industrial Hygienist may need to be available for guidance during off duty hours.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED:

● Education: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, engineering, physical science, or any other occupational/safety/chemical hygiene Bachelor’s or higher degree.

● Required Experience: 5+ years of occupational and laboratory safety experience.

● Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

● Remote and on client site for initial training
