Job Announcement

Join the team at Fairfax County to deliver cutting edge geospatial solutions to the county government and public at large. As a senior member of the Agency Geospatial Services in the Geographic Information Systems Division of the Department of Information Technology (DIT), this position is a technical and business expert in the field of geospatial technology, responsible for providing a wide range technologically-based geographic services to county agencies and the public.

This position is responsible for the following:

  • Manages complex projects to develop spatially based solutions for business problems in response to agency requests or needs

  • Consults with agencies' GIS and information technology analysts to determine requirements for GIS solutions and data

  • Develops and maintains applications, maps, and dashboards using GIS software such as ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise

  • Utilizes the GIS to perform complex, high-level spatial analysis

  • Supports the GIS Division’s internal and external web presences

  • Manages the use of the county’s web GIS organizations

  • Develops and implements GIS training

  • Participates on governance committees for implementing standards for enterprise GIS data, web, and mobility

  • Provides GIS technical support

  • Responds to inquiries regarding GIS products and services

  • Stays up-to-date with the latest developments in GIS technology

  • Communicates GIS capabilities and initiatives

  • Participates in the development of technical summaries, papers, and presentations

  • Attends and presents GIS-related content at workshops, meetings, and professional conferences

  • Provides support to the county Emergency Operations Center in times of activation

  • Performs related work as required

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in computer science, geography or related field which included coursework in Oracle and/or another complex database platform; plus two years of experience in working with and developing systems utilizing GIS platforms such as ESRI’s ArcGIS Desktop or Server software suites; or performing GIS modeling (e.g., relationship classes, topologies, 3-D, object, data) and spatial analysis (e.g., proximity analysis, image analysis, routing analysis).

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work well with others in a team environment and to work independently with little supervision. Extensive understanding of GIS technology, including spatial analysis, geospatial data processing, and data modeling techniques. Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Strong analytical problem-solving skills with the ability to think critically and creatively. Ability to be dynamic and proactive and take initiative to propose and implement innovative solutions to improve processes and outcomes. At least four years of GIS project experience, including two years with a large multi-user geographic information system conducting advanced level spatial analysis. Extensive experience with Esri’s ArcGIS Desktop applications, including both ArcGIS Pro and ArcMap and their extensions, including Spatial, Network, Business, and Geostatistical Analyst. At least two years of experience developing applications with ArcGIS Online and/or ArcGIS Enterprise Portal. Experience managing users and content in a web GIS organization. Database experience (e.g., SQL queries, Entity Relationship diagram creation) including SDE and Oracle or MS SQL. Familiarity with ETL processes for geographic data. Project and systems management experience. Excellent organizational skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to lift 50 pound rolls of printer paper. Ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Duties are generally sedentary, performed in a normal office environment. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
