Land Development Services (LDS) is the steward of the county's land development and building construction codes and regulations, and its staff members embrace their essential role as "first preventers." Every day, through careful review, permitting and inspection of site and building construction, our staff protect the health, safety, welfare, and environment for those who live in, work in, and visit Fairfax County. Our department also serves as the gateway to much of the county's economic development, reviewing over 30,000 building and site plan submissions, issuing nearly 70,000 building permits, and conducting over 220,000 building and site inspections each year. The position reviews permit applications and site-related plans and documentation for addressing and ownership requirements, bond status, resource-protection restrictions, and soil conditions. Reviews property plats and grading plans to ensure submitted documentation meets all the applicable codes such as the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Ordinance. Upon submission of site-related plans and waivers, identifies minimum requirements, reviews for completeness, ascertains scope of work, and determines acceptance in accordance with applicable codes/ordinances. Calculates and determines conservation deposit and pro-rata share amounts and collects fees. Processes plans to and from appropriate review agencies. Assists in the acceptance, review, and processing of plans submitted and maintenance agreements under the Virginia Stormwater Management Program. Ensures submitted stormwater management plans meet the minimum criteria and the related BMPs are acceptable to the county and state. Processes and verifies data entry and coverage for the Virginia Stormwater Management Program permit per county and state requirements. Communicates with customers and county staff regarding stormwater program related submissions and requirements, maintenance agreements, land disturbance activity and associated fees. Works u nder the supervision of the Chief of the Site Application Center.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus, three years of engineering technical support work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Working knowledge of land development processes.

  • Experience in reading, interpreting, and appropriately applying land development codes and regulations.

  • Working knowledge of the Planning and Land Use System (PLUS) or similar.

  • Experience working on a paraprofessional staff in a fast-paced, customer service-oriented environment.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to lift heavy items/plans up to 50 lbs. with assistance; to move plans between floors and walk plans to engineers; ability to bend, crouch, stoop, and twist upper body to maneuver in work station; and the ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

The appointee of this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.
