Regardless of your experience – it may be 2 years or 20 years - Stantec needs a Fairbanks-region based bird biologist capable of conducting raptor and migratory bird surveys in Interior Alaska.

Grounded in safety, quality, and ethics, our bird biology team leads the field in evaluating and mitigating the potential impacts of wind farms to wildlife resources. Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Fairbanks Environmental Services group is seeking a Bird Biology Field Technician to support environmental field surveys, and reporting for our clients.

The selected candidate will apply their interest in Alaskan birds to complete field work on raptor and migration counts. The primary project will be investigating and documenting the bird resources around a proposed wind energy project in the Interior region. As a field technician, you will lead baseline data collection. You will be provided protocols, professional mentorship, and the equipment/vehicles needed to conduct the surveys. You will need to implement the work independently and supervise and collaborate with other members on the field team.

At this time, the project anticipates needing your services on an intermittent, on call, basis for just the summer of 2024. Our goal is to schedule the work to meet your availability, as allowed by the project.

This position will be based out of our Fairbanks office and may include winter snowmachining, and summer ATV or Side by Side driving to observe birds at various remote areas off Murphy Dome. Work may involve helicopter travel.

Your Key Responsibilities

You Will Lead With

  • Seasonal Bird Surveys for raptor and migratory birds

  • Record, enter, organize, manage, and analyze data; and

  • Assist with and prepare portions of written reports, tables, spreadsheets, databases, and maps for client and regulatory agency review.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • An interest in Alaskan birds, natural resource conservation, and the outdoors is essential.

  • The ability to solve problems using critical thinking and to complete tasks with consideration to their own and the team's safety is important.

  • A positive attitude and focus on safety in all working conditions is key.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including strong note-taking skills and attention to detail.

  • Experienced at working well in a team atmosphere and independently as required.

  • Must have the willingness to learn new skills while conducting field work.

  • Conscientious, organized, and disciplined.

  • Good driving record and valid driver’s license required.

  • Willingness to travel and conduct field work in remote areas for extended periods is expected for this position. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

  • Drive snowmachines and ATVs offroad. Drive pickup trucks on remote gravel roads. Drive trailered equipment on gravel, icy, and/or snowy roads.

  • Walk in rough, uneven terrain.

  • Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.

  • Prior to employment, this position will require the successful passing of a pre-employment physical and drug screen.

Education and Experience

  • The ideal candidate will have, at minimum, 2-3 seasons of experience conducting bird surveys or bird watching.

  • Demonstrated experience with biological surveys in the region is preferred. Must be able to visually identify raptor and migratory birds in the Fairbanks region, using readily available reference materials

  • Must be comfortable with computers and hand-held GPS units.
