Literacy Council of Alaska Adult Education Math Instructor in Fairbanks, Alaska

Overview:

The Literacy Council of Alaska is looking for a part-time instructor to assist our students in studying for their high school equivalency test and adult students in need of math tutoring. This position will take place in study hall working one-on-one or in small groups with students. The instructor will use AEFLA standards to assist our students with securing employment, further education, or training. Our ideal candidate is an experienced teacher or tutor with a flexible mindset. This position will have the opportunity to assist students in person and online.

Job Duties:

Instruction (80%)

  • Instruct individuals one-on-one or in small groups in the following areas:

    • Math fundamentals

    • Algebra

    • Equations and graphs

    • Functions

    • Geometry

    • Test taking strategies

  • Monitor participants' needs in order to remediate educational deficiencies

  • Assess program students using the TABE and BEST tests adhering to the State of Alaska Policy Manual

  • Work with students to develop and pursue career and post-secondary pathways

Lesson Planning (10%)

  • Conduct needs assessment analysis for each participant

  • Develop educational plans of action for each participant

Reporting (10%)

  • Update student information accurately and timely in Alaska Jobs

  • Regularly update the program coordinator with attendance records, student progress, and test readiness

  • Maintain the confidentiality of records, portfolios, and student progress reports

Job Skills and Qualifications:
  • Confident teaching all math skills needed for the high school equivalency test and adult education

  • Able to create new teaching strategies and accommodate different learning styles

  • Interpersonal skills and motivational strategies

  • Effective communication with supervisors and coworkers

  • Adaptable to student needs

  • Proficient in G suite, database management, and record keeping

  • Must be able to pass a background check

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching in a professional setting

  • Prior experience working with LCA programs

  • Bachelors degree in mathematics or related field

This position is supervised by the AE Program Coordinator

Starting Salary: $19-20 per/hr DOE @ 15 hrs/wk
