GE Aerospace Staff Engineer - ATO Thermal Systems Design in Evendale, Ohio

Job Description Summary

The Advanced Technology Organization, Thermal System Design Staff Engineer will report to the GE Aerospace Evendale site Thermal Manager, and define and deliver solutions for GE jet engines. In this role you will conduct analyses and tests to define and optimize combustor design using heat transfer and fluid mechanics analysis tools, rig testing, and engine testing. You will contribute to new product introduction, improving existing products, and resolving manufacturing issues with mechanical design engineers. Components include hot gas path hardware such as blades and nozzles, heat exchangers, seals, and mechanical/fluid systems.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Engineering activities relating to the sciences of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer.

  • Develop and apply knowledge of the movement of air as a fluid through complex mechanical systems and the exchange of thermal energy between components.

  • Primary focus on combustor design, including thermal design and/or CFD

  • Uses judgment to make decisions or solve moderately complex tasks or problems in areas of operational/product management, manufacturing, technology, or engineering. Provides new perspective on existing solutions. Uses technical experience and expertise to support recommendations. Uses multiple internal and limited external sources outside of own function to arrive at decisions.

  • Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience. Lead projects. Explains difficult or sensitive information; works to influence and build consensus.

  • Execute the analysis, design, test, and integration of assigned components or systems to meet product requirements and business standards.

  • Proven interpersonal skills. Ability to provide informal guidance to less experienced team members

  • Participate on teams assigned to address engineering and organizational initiatives.

  • Collaborate with others by sharing information to solve problems and promote open dialogue.

  • Communicate openly and clearly with other team members from other disciplines.

  • Prepare, present, and/or review technical data with internal and external customers.

  • Assure proper documentation of technical data consistent with engineering policies.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or Computer Science from an accredited college or university

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a related engineering role

Desired Characteristics

  • Advanced Degree in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering with emphasis in heat transfer or fluid mechanics

  • Demonstrated experience with design, test, and analysis tools relating to thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, flow networks, or heat transfer.

  • Strong problem identification and solution skills

  • Experience with gas turbine design

  • Ability to plan, execute, and document engineering activities and coordinate several projects simultaneously

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Shares critical information, speaks with candor, and contributes constructively

  • Ability to work independently. Demonstrated interest and experience in technical mentorship.

  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to influence others and lead with minimal guidance.

  • Creativity and initiative to lead improvements in products and processes.
