Department Summary

The Department of the History of Art & Architecture (“HAA”) offers undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD programs in the history, theory, and criticism of art, architecture, and visual culture. It is also home to the Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies.

Position Summary

The Department of the History of Art and Architecture is seeking a Visiting Assistant Professor of Modern Art and Architecture for the 2024-2025 academic year. The successful candidate will teach seven classes (2/3/2), including the third part of our “Baroque to Contemporary” survey (ARH 206) and/or ARH353 Modern Art, 1880-1950, as well as undergraduate and graduate courses in modern art (roughly from mid-19th to mid-20th centuries) in a global context, engaging critically with both canonical and alternative histories of modernity. We welcome applicants specializing in any geographical area of modern art. Related interest in design, urbanism, or museum studies is also welcome.

Minimum Requirements

• Ph.D. in Art and/or Architectural History or other related field required prior to appointment; ABD may also be considered.

• Visiting faculty members are generally in residence and are expected to participate in the full range of faculty activities.

• Visiting faculty must hold a like or relevant position at another institution or have recently obtained a terminal degree.

Professional Competencies

• Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively and facilitate student learning.

• Ability to work cooperatively with diverse faculty and student populations.

• Ability to conduct independent, high-quality scholarship or creative practice.

Preferred Qualifications

• Excellent record of scholarly, creative, or other professional accomplishment in relevant field.

• Prior college or university-level teaching experience.
