Arnot Health Medical Office Technician - Medical Oncology in Elmira, New York

Job Description

7:30AM - 4PM Monday through Friday

MAIN FUNCTION:

Performs established laboratory and medical procedures in a physician office setting. Reports to Director of Operations

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collection and analysis of laboratory specimens:

  1. Collects specimens from patients. Processes and directs all referred test specimens in an appropriate and timely manner. Submits all necessary billing information to the referral laboratory.**

  2. Performs CLIA-waivered laboratory tests in a timely manner and reports results to ordering physician. Submits all required billing information to Outpatient Services Physician Billing.**

  3. Maintains constant alertness to maintain accuracy and precision. Relates abnormal lab findings to the primary nurse or Nurse Manager and (if applicable) the appropriate referral laboratory.**

  4. Is familiar with and in-compliance with all pertinent rules and regulations including safety and infection control policies and Right to Know laws. Wears appropriate personal protective equipment whenever required.**

  5. Maintains work areas, supplies, and equipment.

  6. Educates co-workers about pertinent clinical and administrative procedures for specimen collection and lab testing to ensure service quality during coverage periods.

Medical Assistant Requirements:

  1. Conducts or assists with medical procedures and offices functions including**:

a. Answers telephone, schedules patient routine appointments, responds to inquires/problems. Refers clinical calls to nurse for assessment and triage.

b. Telephones patient with test results and follow up recommendation as directed by provider.

c. Phones in/writes prescriptions as directed by provider.

d. Reviews incoming mail/test results and prioritizes for provider review.

e. Prepares patient for examination/surgery; vital signs, medication review, surgical trays/instruments necessary and review of current problem.

f. Assists physician with procedures such as pelvic exams, ear lavage, dermatologic surgeries, etc.

h. Performs ancillary testing such as EKG, PFS, etc.

i. Schedules patient follow-up visits, consultations, testing as recommended by provider.

j. Maintains and organizes patient records, files documents after provider review.

  1. Cleans and disinfects equipment used for clinical procedures. Arranges for routine inspection, calibration, and/or repair of equipment according to the recommendations of the manufacturer.**

    1. Maintains integrity and completeness of emergency supplies. Ensures that all components are current. Replaces all perishable materials prior to out-dating.

Clerical Functions:

  1. Verifies patient information, address, insurance information and updates as necessary.

  2. Reviews patient encounter forms for necessary documentation including appropriate ICD-9 coding.

Other Requirements:

  1. Is responsible for attending all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position.

  2. Provides age appropriate care to neonate, infant, children, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

  3. Employee understands and demonstrates the importance of satisfying the needs of the customer/patient by interacting with him/her in a friendly and caring way, being attentive to the customer’s needs, both psychologically and physically, and by taking the initiative to maintain communication with the customer in order to provide a secure and pleasant experience with the Arnot Health.

EDUCATION:

High school diploma or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 1 year: Prior phlebotomy experience is required.

CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:

Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of hire date

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Some physical effort required. Light objects lifted, some reaching and stooping. Required to be on feet much of the time.

EXPOSURE CATEGORY:

Category I. Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.
