Sargent & Lundy Senior/Mid-Level Distribution System Planning Engineer in Elkridge, Maryland

Description

This position allows for a hybrid work schedule with a mix of work spent in office and working remote from home.

This senior/mid-level engineering position is within Sargent & Lundy's Electrical Analytical Division and will be responsible for the following:

  • Distribution system planning and analysis, including studies in load application and the impact to the distribution network, short circuit, power quality, flicker, and electromagnetic transients (EMT), to support a variety of clients such as developers and electric utilities, both nationally and internationally

  • Performing distribution system technical analysis, which includes power flow studies, voltage analysis, and EMT studies related to the impact of inverter-based generation

  • Supporting generator interconnection applications and associated system impact studies

  • Aiding clients to comply with applicable regulatory policies, such as: FERC OATT, NERC TPL, TOP, PRC, and FAC standards, Generator Interconnection Applications, and associated studies

Qualifications

Essential skills and experience:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (background in Power/Power Systems) and sufficient industry experience is considered in lieu of an advanced degree

  • A minimum of 5 years relevant engineering experience with an emphasis in power system analysis, modeling and protection, including load flow analysis and time domain analysis

  • Experience in load flow analysis to identify distribution thermal and voltage constraints

  • Experience in harmonics and power quality analysis associated with inverter-based and distributed energy resources

  • Experience using distribution planning software for feeder hosting capability studies, transfer analysis and load forecasting (e.g. CYME, PSS/E, PSLF, Synergi, Milsoft Windmil, DMIS/LoadSEER, DEW, PSCAD, and EMTP-RV)

  • Familiarity with industry standards, such as IEEE, IEC, and ANSI

    Valued but not required skills and experience:

  • Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering is preferred

  • Experience modeling inverter-based resources and renewable generation, such as Wind Turbine Generators (WTG), photovoltaic (PV), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and hybrid generation, and associated collector system for interconnection applications within software programs CYME, PSS/E, PSLF, ETAP, and PSCAD

  • Experience in the interconnection process for small generators (<20MW)

  • Experience in short circuit analysis and using software programs CAPE or ASPEN

  • Experience in load forecasting analysis using DMIS/LoadSEER

  • Knowledge of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and its impact on Distribution Analysis and Planning is a plus

  • Experience in Python, Java Script, or other scripting languages
