Job Summary Our Public Works Department is looking for a skilled and experienced individual to join our Engineering Team, which includes design and construction staff. Sherburne County is one of the fastest growing counties in Minnesota, where you can find a nice blend of suburban and rural life. This position would be located on-site at our Government Center in Elk River, MN, and would provide a good variety between construction and design depending on the time of year and current projects. This position reports to the Construction Supervisor and participate in construction observation of road improvement projects and will be involved in all phases of roadway design preparing construction plans, ensuring all work is in accordance with County, State, or Federal requirements. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Construction: Coordinate and provide construction observation for all road construction activities, maintaining close contact with contractors, engineering firms, utility companies. Acts as the liaison between county engineer and contractors, landowners, to aid in settlement of disputes, misunderstandings and convey the county's intent. Makes independent decisions and evaluations based on experience to ensure project completion. Coordinates and inspects all infrastructure activities and required documentation to ensure proper procedures meet County, State, and Federal requirements to prevent added cost to the county. Perform and/or coordinate testing on all materials pertaining to infrastructure construction (Class 5, Sand, Bituminous, Concrete, etc.) ensuring material being used meets current specifications, laid out by state and federal requirements. Design: Producing roadway infrastructure plans and specifications that represent the county's intent and are compliant with State/Federal regulations. Computing quantities that will be used by constructions companies to bid on projects. Preparing various permits required by state and local authorities. Researching archived data to ensure the final design is accurate and precise. Miscellaneous: Examine the thickness of bituminous and existing class 5 to ensure previous information is correct. Check the condition of various structures in the county to ensure the existing documented condition is properly noted. Answer questions from the general public concerning highway construction, maintenance and other problems.
