JOB SUMMARY**

  • Instructs individuals and groups to be skillful in swimming and water safety.
  • Ensures safety of patrons in aquatic facility; prevents and responds to emergencies.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school degree or equivalent or be a minimum of 16 years of age enrolled in school with an active student status.
  • One (1) year practical experience in swim training and conditioning, water safety and aquatic fitness; or any equivalent experience or training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Possession of a nationally recognized lifeguard certification preferred. Certification must remain current throughout employment with the
  • Must possess swimming skills to successfully pass a swim test.
  • Sound knowledge of proper swimming techniques and water safety rules.
  • Must successfully complete the in-house Swim Lesson Instructor Certification before instructing in YWCA pools.
  • May require discipline-specific certification from but not limited to American Red Cross (Water Safety Instructor or Basic Swim Instructor).
  • CPR and First Aid Certification required.
  • Position requires superb physical condition.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with people of all ages.
  • Must be willing to work weekends, late afternoons, and evenings and/or before and after normal hours.
  • Ability to create a fun atmosphere in class required.
  • Must be able to perform job in the safest possible manner due to high injury risk.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.
  • May be required to have access to personal vehicle with valid driver's license and proof of sufficient liability insurance if assignments required multi-site classes.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • 16+ years old.
  • Knowledge of water safety, pool chlorination and filtration systems.
  • Excellent swimming skills.
  • First Aid/CPR certified.
  • Able to interact positively and communicate well.
  • Able to analyze situations and make decisions.
  • Good physical condition needed to lift/carry persons in water.
  • Stamina needed to work in sun in extreme heat for long hours.
  • Access to vehicle with required liability insurance and valid.
